{"id":22154,"date":"2016-11-12T11:46:34","date_gmt":"2016-11-12T16:46:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=22154"},"modified":"2016-11-12T11:46:44","modified_gmt":"2016-11-12T16:46:44","slug":"nato-mulls-worst-case-scenario-in-case-trump-pulls-us-troops-out-of-europe-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=22154","title":{"rendered":"NATO mulls worst-case scenario in case Trump pulls US troops out of Europe \u2013 report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"article__heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/366668-trump-us-support-nato\/\">NATO mulls worst-case scenario in case Trump pulls US troops out of Europe \u2013 report<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"article__cover\">\n<div class=\"media \"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__item \" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2016.11\/original\/58271d2cc36188b53e8b460c.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Francois Lenoir\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"media__footer media__footer_bottom \">\n<div class=\"media__title media__title_arcticle\">\u00a9 Francois Lenoir \/ Reuters<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__share\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__summary summary \">NATO strategists are reportedly planning for a scenario in which Trump orders US troops out of Europe, as the shock result of the US presidential election sinks in, spreading an atmosphere of uncertainty.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__text text \">\n<p>According to Spiegel magazine,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/magazin.spiegel.de\/SP\/2016\/46\/147863976\/index.html?utm_source=spon&amp;utm_campaign=centerpage\" target=\"_blank\">strategists<\/a>\u00a0from NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg\u2019s staff have drafted a secret report which includes a worst-case scenario in which Trump orders US troops to withdraw from Europe and fulfills his threat to make Washington less involved in European security.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor the first time, the US exit from NATO has become a threat\u201d<\/em>which would mean the end of the bloc, a German NATO officer told the magazine.<\/p>\n<p>During his campaign, Trump repeatedly slammed NATO, calling the alliance\u00a0<em>\u201cobsolete.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0He also suggested that under his administration, the US may refuse to come to the aid of NATO allies unless they<em>\u201cpay their bills\u201d and \u201cfulfill their obligations to us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are experiencing a moment of the highest and yet unprecedented uncertainty in the transatlantic relationship,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said Wolfgang Ischinger, former German ambassador in Washington and head of the prominent Munich Security Conference. By criticizing the collective defense, Trump has questioned the basic pillar of NATO as a whole, Ischinger added.<\/p>\n<p>The president-elect therefore has to reassure the European allies that he remains firm on the US commitment under Article 5 of the NATO charter prior to his inauguration, the top diplomat stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Stoltenberg lambasted Trump\u2019s agenda, saying:\u00a0<em>\u201cAll allies have made a solemn commitment to defend each other.
