Some scientists predict that the region will be free of summer ice in as few as 30 years. Without question, the effects of environmental change have led to increased activity in the region, ushering in new possibilities in Arctic shipping lanes and resource development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10.5px 0px;\">With 162,000 kilometers of Arctic coastline, it is undeniable that the increased global interest in the Arctic region is a pivotal concern to Canada\u2019s strategic interests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10.5px 0px;\">The Harper government has branded itself as a resolute defender of Canada\u2019s Arctic sovereignty. But prime ministerial photo-ops and patriotic victories of recovered wrecks will not be sufficient to protect those interests, and one might argue that the reality of the sovereignty situation does not measure up to the government\u2019s tone of rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10.5px 0px;\">In 2009 the Canadian government released\u00a0<em style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Canada\u2019s Northern Strategy<\/em>, a document outlining four priority areas to guide the country\u2019s Arctic policy: exercising sovereignty, promoting social and economic development, protecting the environment, and improving and devolving governance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10.5px 0px;\">The following year, the Conservative government further detailed those pillars in their\u00a0<em style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Statement on Canada\u2019s Foreign Arctic Policy.\u00a0<\/em>Exercising sovereignty over the Arctic was established as the government\u2019s number one priority and it was declared that \u201cin pursuing each pillar, Canada was committed to exercising the full extent of its sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10.5px 0px;\">&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada Falling Short on Arctic Sovereignty &#8211; Geopoliticalmonitor.com.
