Avoiding new and contradictory information is step one, supplanted with a quest for obtaining reassurances as needed.<\/p>\n<p>Questioning what the reassurances are, their sources, how they came to be, or what they are based on and\/or if they are even valid are not part of the program. So those so inclined defer knowledge and presumed expertise to others who share their psychological and ideological preferences, and what results is a profound urgency to preserve what they know, regardless of the implications. Sometimes that\u2019s just fine.<\/p>\n<p>RUNNING THE RISKS<\/p>\n<p>But when the challenges we face have the potential for imposing so much change, denying themselves a place at the table carries a certain set of risks. Blithely dismissing those risks\u2014made easier by avoiding information worth at least considering\u2014is a curious strategy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www3.alternet.org\/belief\/why-does-right-embrace-ignorance-virtue\">As liberalism has increasingly<\/a>\u00a0been aligned with the values of empiricism and reason, the incentives for conservatives to reject empiricism and reason multiply.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To be a \u2018conservative\u2019 increasingly means taking a contemptuous view of reality.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Today we in America are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/lance-simmens\/the-ignorance-of-denial_b_5313589.html\">besieged by a reversal of intellectual growth<\/a>\u00a0that finds comfort not in scientific inquiry and method but rather in instinctive reliance upon either what we want to believe or what we think others want to hear.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peak Oil &amp; System Justification: \u201cThreatening\u201d Status Quo It\u2019s a lot easier to seek confirmation\u00a0than information.
