US anti-Russia rhetoric goes nuclear with threats of covert cyber-attacks<\/a><\/h3>\n

The world seems to be sleepwalking its way into a geopolitical maelstrom as the US, increasingly paranoid over Russia, said it is considering a cyber-attack against the Kremlin in retaliation for purported Russian meddling in the US election process.<\/div>\n

NBC News, citing those conveniently omnipresent\u00a0\u201canonymous sources,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that the CIA is preparing to\u00a0\u201cdeliver options to the White House for a wide-ranging \u2018clandestine\u2019 cyber operation designed to harass and \u2018embarrass\u2019 the Kremlin leadership,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0as if dragging the Kremlin through the mud of the 2016 presidential campaign wasn\u2019t embarrassing enough.<\/p>\n

The report went on to say that the covert action plan, which is certainly no longer covert,\u00a0\u201cis designed to protect the US election system and insure that Russian hackers can\u2019t interfere with the November vote (\u2026) Another goal is to send a message to Russia that it has crossed a line.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Before continuing, it is important to note that America\u2019s electronic voting machines have long been vulnerable to hackers and vote riggers. And with all due respect to Russian ingenuity and resourcefulness, it was not the Russians who revealed that information to the Americans. In 2006, a group of computer programmers from Princeton University said they successfully\u00a0created<\/a>\u201cvote-stealing software\u201d<\/em>\u00a0that could be easily installed on a Diebold AccuVote-TS (the programmers, incidentally, admitted they acquired the voting machine\u00a0\u201cat a party\u201d<\/em>).<\/p>\n

NBC then interviewed former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell about Washington\u2019s alleged plans to conduct a cyber-attack against Russia. Morell was against the covert cyber plan, but for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cPhysical attacks on networks is not something the US wants to do because we don\u2019t want to set a precedent for other countries to do it as well, including against us,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.\u00a0\u201cMy own view is that our response shouldn\u2019t be covert \u2013 it should overt, for everybody to see.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
