Alabama, Tennessee, & Georgia Declare States Of Emergency As Gas Shortages Loom After Pipeline Leak<\/a><\/h3>\n

As Native Americans protesters face\u00a0arrest<\/a>\u00a0in North Dakota for blocking the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline,\u00a0TheAntiMedia’s Carey Wedler reports<\/a>\u00a0a gasoline pipeline spill is currently unfolding in the South.\u00a0The leak has prompted Alabama Gov.\u00a0Robert Bentley<\/a>, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, and\u00a0Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal<\/a>\u00a0to declare states of emergency.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Colonial Pipeline, which\u00a0runs from Houston to New York<\/a>, began leaking on September 9, spilling 250,000 gallons of gasoline, or\u00a06,000 barrels<\/a>. The pipeline was built in 1962, and the current leak in Helena, Alabama, is the largest one Colonial Pipeline has experienced in 20 years,\u00a0Reuters\u00a0noted<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

AL.com\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that according to the Colonial Pipeline company\u2019s spokesperson, Bill Berry, the pipeline could still be leaking:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe leaking pipeline was shut down [last] Friday after the leak was discovered, but Berry said there may be additional gas still inside the pipeline. The leaking section of pipeline hasn\u2019t been excavated yet due to safety precautions, so Berry said the condition of the pipeline and cause of the leak is still unknown.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hundreds of employees and contract workers\u00a0face health risks from inhaling vapor<\/a>\u00a0as they work overtime to clean up the spill, which the company says is contained to a mining retention pond.\u00a0AL.com\u00a0reports \u201cthe leak was discovered at the inactive mine site by employees of the Alabama Surface Mining Commission.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The governors of Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama have\u00a0declared<\/a>\u00a0states of emergency, not due to environmental concerns, but\u00a0over the gas shortage<\/a>\u00a0that will result from the leak.\u00a0<\/strong>After Colonial Pipeline\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0Thursday there would be a delay in restarting the pipeline because \u201cwork activity was intermittent overnight due to unfavorable weather conditions that caused gasoline vapors to settle over the site,\u201d the\u00a0price of gasoline futures\u00a0rose<\/a>\u00a0six percent… even as crude futures prices tumbled…<\/strong><\/p>\n
