The ruling came after the Standing Rock Sioux tribe attempted to halt the pipeline\u2019s construction through the justice system because they claimed it would violate federal laws and jeopardize their water supply.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Department of Justice, the Department of the Interior, and the Department of the Army\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/joint-statement-department-justice-department-army-and-department-interior-regarding-standing\" target=\"_blank\">quickly overruled<\/a>the court\u2019s decision, placing a temporary halt on Dakota Access pipeline construction on Army Corps of Engineering lands. Their statement says the decision will take effect until the Army \u201c<i>can determine whether it will need to reconsider any of its previous decisions regarding the Lake Oahe site under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) or other federal laws.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The press release continued:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cTherefore, construction of the pipeline on Army Corps land bordering or under Lake Oahe will not go forward at this time. The Army will move expeditiously to make this determination, as everyone involved \u2014 including the pipeline company and its workers \u2014 deserves a clear and timely resolution. In the interim, we request that the pipeline company voluntarily pause all construction activity within 20 miles east or west of Lake Oahe.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>This development comes on the heels of North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple\u2019s decision to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theantimedia.org\/north-dakota-national-guard-pipeline\/\" target=\"_blank\">activate the state\u2019s National Guard<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday, stoking fears that tensions on the ground could grow.
