Austerity politics embodies one of the most aggressive manifestations of neoliberalism, but curiously, the degrowth movement has been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2015-12-28\/a-growing-confusion-on-the-left\" target=\"_blank\">exposed to criticism from the (both liberal and Marxist) Left associating it with such politics<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2015-12-28\/a-growing-confusion-on-the-left%5D,This\">This<\/a>\u00a0prompted many degrowth activists to insist that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/postwachstum.net\/2010\/11\/23\/12-lines-of-flight-for-a-just-degrowth-economy\/]\" target=\"_blank\">your austerity is not our degrowth.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0<span id=\"more-185307\"><\/span>Despite the ideological variety and the occasional intellectual ricochets within the movement, I considered this so self-evident that I was somewhat bewildered to see\u00a0<i>an actual advocate of degrowth\u00a0<\/i>openly claim more or less the opposite. In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrereichel.de\/2015\/07\/16\/austerity-and-degrowth\/\" target=\"_blank\">his article on \u201cAusterity and Degrowth<\/a>\u201d Andr\u00e9 Reichel attempts to redeem the ideas of neoliberalism and austerity from a degrowth perspective, suggesting that its mode of economic reasoning facilitates a transition to degrowth. I would like to seize this opportunity to reflect on the relationship between capitalism, austerity politics and degrowth.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong>The crisis as a dilemma for the degrowth movement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\">Reichel\u2019s point of departure happens to be a formidable challenge for the degrowth movement bringing up the following questions:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.degrowth.de\/en\/2015\/09\/an-economic-turnaround-for-greece-and-the-whole-of-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\">What would be an appropriate degrowth response to the economic crisis in Greece<\/a>?
