Fed Up With The Corruption: Mexico on Brink of Revolution<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

(COMMONDREAMS<\/a>)\u00a0<\/strong>The Mexican government\u2019s deadly crackdown on a teacher\u2019s union protest has rattled the nation in recent days, as 200,000 doctors on Wednesday joined the ongoing national strike against President Enrique Pe\u00f1a Nieto\u2019s neoliberal reforms.<\/div>\n

Anti-government sentiment is mounting after police forces\u00a0opened fire<\/a>\u00a0on a teacher protest in Oaxaca on Sunday, killing at least eight.<\/p>\n

Since then, two high level government officials from that state, Oaxaca Minister of Indigenous Affairs Adelfo Regino Montes and Secretary of Labor Daniel Gutierrez, have\u00a0resigned<\/a>\u00a0in protest of the \u201cauthoritarian actions that repress and kill Oaxacan people who defend their rights and the government\u2019s negligence to any possibility of dialogue,\u201d as Gutierrez put it.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, members of the medical organization\u00a0Yo Soy Medico 17<\/a>\u00a0from 32 states joined the ongoing strike, stating their opposition to Pe\u00f1a Nieto\u2019s health reforms, which they say are a \u201cdisguised way of privatizing health in Mexico,\u201d\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0TeleSUR.<\/em><\/p>\n

Further, the group \u2014which translates to \u201cI\u2019m a Doctor\u201d\u2014has vocally condemned the killings and what they describe as intimidation and repression by authorities and organized crime. \u201cAccording to doctors,\u201d\u00a0TeleSUR<\/em>\u00a0explains, \u201cas violence has increased in Mexico they have suffered the consequences of crimes like kidnappings, enforced disappearances and killings that have gone unpunished by authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The dissident Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educaci\u00f3n (CNTE) teacher\u2019s union\u2014which largely represents educators in Mexico\u2019s predominantly rural and Indigenous southern states\u2014has been staging dramatic demonstrations and road blockades against new mandated teacher evaluations, which they say ignore the challenges of their region while enabling mass layoffs.<\/p>\n

These protests have been met with violent government repression, including the recent arrest of two of the union\u2019s leaders. But members explain that the government\u2019s opposition to the teacher\u2019s union runs far deeper.<\/p>\n
