How could China, or the world in total, reach peak coal in a timeframe that makes a difference?<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>If we look at China\u2019s coal production and consumption in BP\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bp.com\/en\/global\/corporate\/energy-economics\/statistical-review-of-world-energy.html\">2016 Statistical Review of World Energy<\/a>\u00a0(SRWE),\u00a0this is what we see:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41003\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-shortcode=\"caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gailtheactuary.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/china-production-and-consumption-of-coal-to-20152.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41003\" src=\"https:\/\/gailtheactuary.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/china-production-and-consumption-of-coal-to-20152.png?w=640&amp;h=383\" alt=\"Figure 1. China\u2019s production and consumption of coal based on BP 2016 SRWE.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Figure 2 shows that the quantities of other fuels are increasing in a pattern similar to past patterns. None of them is large enough to make a real difference in offsetting the loss of coal consumption. Renewables (really \u201cother renewables\u201d) include wind, solar, geothermal, and wood burned to produce electricity. China\u2019s energy consumption by fuel, based on BP 2016 SRWE.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Why would a country selectively decide to slow down the growth of the fuel that has made its current \u201cboom\u201d possible? Coal is generally cheaper than other fuels. The fact that China has a lot of low-cost coal, and can use it together with its cheap labor, has allowed China to manufacture goods very inexpensively, and thus be very competitive in world markets.<\/p>\n<p>In my view, China really had no choice regarding the cutback in coal production\u2013market forces were pushing for less production of goods, and this was playing out as lower commodity prices of many types, including coal, oil, and natural gas, plus many types of metals.<\/p>\n<p>China is mostly self-sufficient in coal production, but it is a major importer of natural gas and oil.\u00a0<em>Lower oil and natural gas prices made\u00a0<strong>imported<\/strong>\u00a0fuels of these types more affordable, and thus encouraged more importing of these products. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China: Is peak coal part of its\u00a0problem?
