Who\u2019s Really The Fascist?<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n

Like most of you, I too see an increase in the use of the term \u2018fascism\u2019 in the media, and it is -almost- always linked to the rise of Donald Trump in the US and various politicians and parties in Europe, Le Pen in France, Wilders in Holland, Erdogan in Turkey, plus a pretty bewildering and motley crew of \u2018groups\u2019 in Eastern Europe (Hungary\u2019s Orban) and Scandinavia. I guess you could throw in Nigel Farage and UKIP in Britain as well.<\/p>\n

And while I -sort of- understand why the term is used the way it is, and it\u2019s not possible to say it\u2019s used wrong simply because \u2018fascism\u2019 knows so many different interpretations and definitions, very few of which can be classified as definitely wrong, that doesn\u2019t mean that just because you\u2019re not definitely wrong, you\u2019re therefore right, and certainly not comprehensive or complete. And there\u2019s a story in there that deserves to be told. Who is really the fascist? From Wikipedia:<\/p>\n

George Orwell wrote in 1944 that \u201cthe word \u2018Fascism\u2019 is almost entirely meaningless \u2026 almost any English person would accept \u2018bully\u2019 as a synonym for \u2018Fascist’\u201d. Richard Griffiths said in 2005 that \u201cfascism\u201d is the \u201cmost misused, and over-used word, of our times\u201d. \u201cFascist\u201d is sometimes applied to post-war organizations and ways of thinking that academics more commonly term \u201cneo-fascist\u201d.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019m inclined to venture that \u2018terrorism\u2019 is a good second for most misused word, but something tells me that once you get into economics and the way terms like \u2018stimulus\u2019, \u2018unemployment\u2019 and \u2018inflation\u2019 are used, this is an argument that would never end. Let\u2019s stick with \u2018fascism\u2019 for now.<\/p>\n
