The City is a\u00a0semi-offshore state, a bit like the UK\u2019s crown dependencies and overseas territories, tax havens\u00a0legitimized by the Privy Council.\u00a0Britain\u2019s financial secrecy undermines the tax base while providing a conduit into the legal economy for gangsters, kleptocrats and drug barons.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Even the more orthodox financial institutions deploy a succession of scandalous practices: pension mis-selling, endowment mortgage fraud, the payment protection insurance con, Libor rigging. A former minister in the last government, Lord Green, ran HSBC\u00a0while it engaged in\u00a0money laundering for drug gangs,\u00a0systematic tax evasion\u00a0and the\u00a0provision of services\u00a0to Saudi and Bangladeshi banks linked to the financing of terrorists.\u00a0Sometimes\u00a0the UK looks to me like an ever so civilised mafia state.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Britain is the most corrupt country in the world, according to journalist Roberto Saviano, who spent more than a decade exposing the criminal dealings of the\u00a0Italian Mafia<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mr Saviano, who wrote the best-selling expos\u00e9s Gomorrah and\u00a0ZeroZeroZero<\/a>, made the comments at the\u00a0Hay Literary Festival<\/a>. The 36-year-old has been living\u00a0under police protection since publishing revelations about members of the Camorra, a powerful Neapolitan branch of the mafia, in 2006.<\/em><\/p>\n

He told an audience at Hay-on-Wye: \u201cIf I asked you what is the most corrupt place on Earth you might tell me well it\u2019s Afghanistan, maybe Greece, Nigeria, the South of Italy and I will tell you it\u2019s the UK.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
