{"id":20753,"date":"2016-05-19T19:50:52","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T00:50:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=20753"},"modified":"2016-05-19T19:50:52","modified_gmt":"2016-05-20T00:50:52","slug":"shell-oil-spill-cleanup-operation-ends-as-voices-against-new-gulf-drilling-grow-louder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=20753","title":{"rendered":"Shell Oil Spill Cleanup Operation Ends As Voices Against New Gulf Drilling Grow Louder"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2016\/05\/19\/shell-oil-spill-cleanup-operation-ends-voices-against-new-gulf-drilling-grow-louder\">Shell Oil Spill Cleanup Operation Ends As Voices Against New Gulf Drilling Grow Louder<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10630 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted desktop-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/114A3703-Edit.jpg?itok=_noaAJWt\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"horizontal-social-bar horizontal-social-bar-top clearfix\">\n<div class=\"horizontal-share-left\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"horizontal-share-right\">Five days after\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shell.us\/?gclid=CNmpjsqu5swCFYhTgQodzd4Nbw&amp;gclsrc=ds\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Dutch Shell<\/a>\u00a0reported an estimated 88,000 gallon crude oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico from its operations in the\u00a0Glider field, the oil company and the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0Coast Guard\u00a0agreed to halt skimming operations used in the cleanup because they were no longer finding recoverable\u00a0oil.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>Both entities stated that no environmental damage has been reported, but independent monitors from Greenpeace,\u00a0Vanishing Earth and Wings Of Care question whether the size and potential impact of the spill are being\u00a0downplayed.<\/p>\n<p>News of Shell\u2019s oil spill 90 miles south of Louisiana\u2019s Timbalier Island came the day before the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2016\/03\/21\/momentum-builds-against-obama-administration-plans-auction-oil-and-gas-drilling-rights-gulf-mexico\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (<span class=\"caps\">BOEM<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0hosted a final week of public meetings on\u00a0the Gulf Coast to give the public a chance to comment on its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boem.gov\/Five-Year-Program-2017-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">Five Year Plan 2017-2022 oil leasing program<\/a>. Its plan calls for lease sales of 47 million acres of the Gulf of Mexico to oil and\u00a0gas companies for offshore drilling on the Outer Continental\u00a0Shelf.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/klfy.com\/2016\/05\/12\/coast-guard-responds-to-oil-spill-in-gulf-of-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shell contracted<\/a>\u00a0Clean Gulf Associates and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msrc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Spill Response Corporation (<span class=\"caps\">MSRC<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0for the cleanup operation.\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">MSRC<\/span>, one of the companies\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">BP<\/span>\u00a0used to clean up its 2010 spill, dumped the dispersant Corexit\u00a0in the\u00a0Gulf.<\/p>\n<p>This time, \u201cdispersant wasn\u2019t used,\u201d the Coast Guard told DeSmog.
