Arguimbau.<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>The participants at the Paris climate change conference saw themselves produce \u201can agreement hailed as \u2018historic, durable and ambitious\u2019\u201dand \u201cthe world\u2019s greatest diplomatic success,\u201d according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/dec\/13\/paris-climate-deal-cop-diplomacy-developing-united-nations\"><u>the UK Guardian<\/u><\/a>\u00a0on Dec. 15, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The president of the Natural Resources Defense Council\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/globalwarming\/files\/paris-climate-agreement-IB.pdf\"><u>said<\/u><\/a>, \u201cA great tide has turned. Finally the world stands united against the central environmental challenge of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9168\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/earthrise.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9168\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/earthrise-300x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/earthrise-300x300.jpg 300x, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/earthrise-150x150.jpg 150x, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/earthrise.jpg 600x\" alt=\"The image of the Earth rising over the surface of the moon, a photograph taken by the first U.S. astronauts to orbit the moon.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The image of the Earth rising over the surface of the moon, a photograph taken by the first U.S. astronauts to orbit the moon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>They were still basking in the glow of their success, when news arrived of a sudden and extreme rise in global temperature, described by climate scientists as \u201cstunning\u201d, \u201ca shocker\u201d, \u201ca bombshell\u2019, \u201churtling at a frightening pace toward the globally agreed maximum of 2C warming over pre-industrial levels\u201d, \u201ca kind of climate emergency\u201d, an event \u201cusing up all our room for manoevre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2016\/mar\/14\/february-breaks-global-temperature-records-by-shocking-amount\"><u>UK Guardian<\/u><\/a>: \u201cFebruary breaks global temperature records by \u2018shocking\u2019 amount.\u201d An event, in short, rendering almost obsolete everything done at the Paris conference.<\/p>\n<p>The most significant aspect of the February event is probably the speed with which it happened. Spikes occur in global temperature during major El Ninos, although ordinarily not in arctic regions or the Southern Hemisphere, and this was the largest spike ever.
