“End the Circus”: Big Oil Group Plots to Exclude Public from Public Lands Bidding at IOGCC Meeting<\/a><\/h3>\n

At the\u00a0Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC<\/span>)<\/a>‘s 2016 meeting in Denver, Colorado this week, a representative from a prominent oil and gas lobbying group advocated that auctions of federal lands should happen online \u201ceBay\u201d-style \u2014 a clear attempt to shut the public out of the bidding process for fossil fuel leases on public\u00a0lands.<\/p>\n

Speaking on public lands issues in front of\u00a0IOGCC<\/span>‘s public lands committee<\/a>, Kathleen Sgamma \u2014 Western Energy Alliance’s (WEA<\/span>) vice president of governmental affairs\u00a0\u2014 compared environmental groups’\u00a0Keep It In The Ground campaign<\/a>\u00a0actions at\u00a0U.S.<\/span>\u00a0Bureau of Land Management (BLM<\/span>) bids to a \u201ccircus.\u201d Sgamma said\u00a0WEA<\/span>\u00a0was in contact with both\u00a0BLM<\/span>\u00a0and Congressional members to push the auctions out of the public sphere and onto the\u00a0internet.<\/p>\n

DeSmog, which attended the\u00a0IOGCC<\/span>\u00a0meeting, recorded the presentation and has\u00a0published it online<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sgamma opened her statement on the Keep It In The Ground \u201ccircus\u201d by pointing to the fact that\u00a0BLM<\/span>\u00a0has already compared the activism, in\u00a0testimony delivered to Congress<\/a>\u00a0(beginning at 54:30) on March 23, 2016, with the right-wing militia that occupied the\u00a0Malheur National Wildlife Refuge’s public lands plot in Oregon.<\/p>\n

Sgamma also revealed that\u00a0WEA<\/span>\u00a0has a counter campaign that it will launch soon to oppose\u00a0Keep It In The Ground.<\/p>\n

So Western Energy Alliance is planning some counter-efforts with Keep It In The Ground which we’ll be announcing probably later this month. We’ve also been working with\u00a0BLM<\/span>\u00a0and Congress to say ‘Let’s just get rid of this circus, let’s just have online auctions. eBay is out there, it can be done.’<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
