Pt 7<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"postContent\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8657\" src=\"http:\/\/peakoilmatters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/091110-088-225x169.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/peakoilmatters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/091110-088-225x169.jpg 225x, http:\/\/peakoilmatters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/091110-088-768x576.jpg 768x, http:\/\/peakoilmatters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/091110-088-650x488.jpg 650x\" alt=\"091110 088\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I began last week\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peakoilmatters.com\/2016\/05\/06\/peak-oil-better-pt-6\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a>\u00a0with a variation of these questions:<\/p>\n<p>How do optimistic projections from ExxonMobil\u2019s \u201cThe Outlook for Energy: A View to 2040\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/corporate.exxonmobil.com\/en\/energy\/energy-outlook\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>\u2014which I highlighted in that post\u2014square themselves in the face of the oil production challenges suggested by the news excerpts which were also included in that piece? How long do those opposed to climate change and peak oil implications dance away from the unpleasant truths?<\/p>\n<p>What is the benefit beyond avoiding painful discussions today? At what point do those contrarian viewpoints give way to a recognition that there is more than enough evidence already in play to make those challenges both very real and quite formidable\u00a0<em>now<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>How does postponing not just acknowledgment but any and all efforts to come to mutual understandings and a commitment to work cooperatively in addressing these matters make it any easier or better for anyone?<\/p>\n<p>At what point does the single-minded pursuit of any and all efforts to oppose, deny, or obstruct the efforts of one\u2019s political opponents give way to a recognition that repeatedly shooting oneself in the foot has limited benefits? A question I\u2019ve raised numerous times in the past is just as relevant today:\u00a0<em>if you have to mislead, misinform, distract, omit, or even lie outright to support your opposing viewpoints or policy proposals, how valid are they to begin with<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><em>What\u2019s the point?<\/em>\u00a0What happens if you \u201csucceed\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s reality about fossil fuels\u2014oil in particular\u2014and production thereof is no different than it was several months ago and no different than it will be in the days ahead: it is still a finite resource.
