Panama Papers Source Wants Whistleblower Immunity to Aid Law Enforcement<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

THE ANONYMOUS SOURCE\u00a0responsible for leaking the vast document trove known as\u00a0the Panama Papers<\/a>\u00a0said in\u00a0a manifesto<\/a>\u00a0published on Friday that she or he \u201cwould be willing to cooperate with law enforcement\u201d to ensure the prosecution of wrongdoing revealed by the paper trail \u2014 but only once \u201cgovernments codify legal protections for whistleblowers into law.\u201d<\/p>\n

The source wrote\u00a0that\u00a0the leaked files on offshore business dealings and shell companies organized by Mossack Fonseca, a law firm based in Panama, revealed \u201cthe scandal of what is legal and allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the source, who took the name \u201cJohn Doe,\u201d argued that since \u201cthe law firm, its founders, and employees actually did knowingly violate myriad laws worldwide, repeatedly,\u201d the wrongdoers there should now be prosecuted.<\/p>\n

Doe added that prosecutors require access to the original documents, noting that media outlets \u201chave rightly stated that they will not provide them to law enforcement agencies. I, however, would be willing to cooperate with law enforcement to the extent that I am able.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat being said,\u201d Doe continued, \u201cI have watched as one after another, whistleblowers and activists in the United States and Europe have had their lives destroyed by the circumstances they find themselves in after shining a light on obvious wrongdoing.\u201d Doe explained:<\/p>\n

Edward Snowden is stranded in Moscow, exiled due to the Obama administration\u2019s decision to prosecute him under the Espionage Act. For his revelations about the NSA, he deserves a hero\u2019s welcome and a substantial prize, not banishment. Bradley Birkenfeld was awarded millions for his information concerning Swiss bank UBS \u2014 and was still given a prison sentence by the Justice Department. Antoine Deltour is presently on trial for providing journalists with information about how Luxembourg granted secret \u201csweetheart\u201d tax deals to multi-national corporations, effectively stealing billions in tax revenues from its neighbour countries. And there are plenty more examples.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
