Throughout Exxon\u2019s global operations, the company knew that\u00a0CO<\/span>2 was a harmful pollutant in the atmosphere years earlier than previously reported.<\/div>\n

DeSmog has uncovered Exxon corporate documents from the late 1970s stating unequivocally \u201cthere is no doubt\u201d that\u00a0CO<\/span>2 from the burning of fossil fuels was a growing \u201cproblem\u201d well understood within the company.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It is assumed that the major contributors of\u00a0CO<\/span>2 are the burning of fossil fuels\u2026\u00a0There is no doubt that increases in fossil fuel usage<\/strong>\u00a0and decreases of forest cover are\u00a0aggravating the potential problem of increased\u00a0CO<\/span>2 in the atmosphere<\/strong>. Technology exists to remove\u00a0CO<\/span>2 from stack gases but removal of only 50% of the\u00a0CO<\/span>2 would double the cost of power generation.\u201d [emphasis\u00a0added]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Those lines appeared in a 1980 report, \u201cReview of Environmental Protection Activities for 1978-1979,\u201d produced by Imperial Oil, Exxon\u2019s Canadian\u00a0subsidiary.<\/p>\n

A distribution list included with the report indicates that it was disseminated to managers across Exxon\u2019s international corporate offices, including in Europe.<\/p>\n
