{"id":20192,"date":"2016-04-24T08:58:55","date_gmt":"2016-04-24T13:58:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=20192"},"modified":"2016-04-24T08:58:55","modified_gmt":"2016-04-24T13:58:55","slug":"top-shale-fracking-executive-we-wont-frack-the-rich","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=20192","title":{"rendered":"Top Shale Fracking Executive: We Won&#8217;t Frack the Rich"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2016\/04\/21\/top-shale-fracking-executive-we-won-t-frack-wealthy\">Top Shale Fracking Executive: We Won&#8217;t Frack the Rich<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10540 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted desktop-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/photo%20shale%20well.jpg?itok=swjcrlhA\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"horizontal-social-bar horizontal-social-bar-top clearfix\">Fracking companies deliberately keep their wells away from the \u201cbig houses\u201d of wealthy and potentially influential people, a top executive from one of the country&#8217;s most prominent shale drilling companies told a gathering of attorneys at a seminar on oil and gas environmental law earlier this month, according the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>\u201c&#8217;We heard Range Resources say it sites its shale gas wells away from large homes where wealthy people live and who might have the money to fight such drilling and fracking operations,&#8217; said Patrick Grenter, an attorney and Center for Coalfield Justice executive director, who attended the lawyers\u2019 forum,\u201d the Post-Gazette\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/powersource.post-gazette.com\/powersource\/latest-oil-and-gas\/2016\/04\/18\/Executive-s-remark-about-shale-gas-well-sites-prompts-sharp-criticism-calls-for-review\/stories\/201604180027\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>. \u201cA handful of attorneys in the audience confirmed that account,\u201d and added that the Range Resources official had prefaced his remarks by saying \u201cTo be\u00a0frank\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The comments were made by Terry Bossert, Range Resources\u2019s vice president for legislative and regulatory affairs, during a presentation at the Pennsylvania Bar Institute&#8217;s Environmental Law Forum on April 7. In 2004, Range Resources was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/pennsylvania\/tag\/range-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\">first company<\/a>\u00a0to drill in Pennsylvania&#8217;s Marcellus shale \u2013 but it has racked up a string of environmental violations so severe that state regulators slapped it with a record-breaking $4.15 million fine in 2014, followed the next year by an $8.9 million fine over a different incident.<\/p>\n<p>The company has also repeatedly been sued by landowners \u2013 and not just in Pennsylvania, but also in their home state of Texas.
