{"id":2008,"date":"2014-11-24T15:31:55","date_gmt":"2014-11-24T20:31:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=2008"},"modified":"2014-11-24T15:31:55","modified_gmt":"2014-11-24T20:31:55","slug":"the-unwelcome-reality-for-u-s-coal-exports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=2008","title":{"rendered":"The Unwelcome Reality For U.S. Coal Exports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Coal\/The-Unwelcome-Reality-For-U.S.-Coal-Exports.html\">The Unwelcome Reality For U.S. Coal Exports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Verdana, 'Helvetica Neue', helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">While the oil and gas industry likes to claim that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/fracking-the-future\/\">fracking<\/a>\u00a0is not an especially water intensive process,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ewg.org\/research\/monster-wells\" target=\"_blank\">a new report<\/a>\u00a0has found that there are more than 250 wells across the country that each require anywhere from 10 to 25 million gallons of water.<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" \/>The American Petroleum Institute<a style=\"color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.api.org\/oil-and-natural-gas-overview\/exploration-and-production\/hydraulic-fracturing\/~\/media\/Files\/Oil-and-Natural-Gas\/Hydraulic-Fracturing-primer\/Hydraulic-Fracturing-Primer-2014-highres.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">suggests<\/a>\u00a0that the typical fracked well uses \u201cthe equivalent of the volume of three to six Olympic sized swimming pools,\u201d which works out to 2-4 million gallons of water.<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" \/>But using data reported by the industry itself and available on the FracFocus.org website,<a style=\"color: #3399cc; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ewg.org\/research\/monster-wells\" target=\"_blank\">Environmental Working Group has determined<\/a>\u00a0that there are at least 261 wells in eight states that used an average of 12.7 million gallons of water, adding up to a total of 3.3 billion gallons, between 2010 and 2013. Fourteen wells used over 20 million gallons each in that time period (see chart below).<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" \/>According to\u00a0<span class=\"caps\" style=\"font-size: 0.9em; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">EWG<\/span>, some two-thirds of these water-hogging wells are in drought-stricken areas. Many parts of Texas, for instance, are suffering through a severe and prolonged drought, yet the Lone Star State has by far the most of what\u00a0<span class=\"caps\" style=\"font-size: 0.9em; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">EWG<\/span>calls \u201cmonster wells\u201d with 149.
