{"id":20068,"date":"2016-04-20T13:35:18","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T18:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=20068"},"modified":"2016-04-20T13:35:18","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T18:35:18","slug":"six-years-after-deepwater-horizon-time-for-serious-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=20068","title":{"rendered":"Six Years After Deepwater Horizon: Time For Serious Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2016\/04\/20\/six-years-after-deepwater-horizon-time-serious-action\">Six Years After Deepwater Horizon: Time For Serious Action<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10520 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted desktop-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/IMG_9768_2.jpg?itok=jyjfau-M\" alt=\"BP oil disaster by Julie Dermansky\" width=\"810\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"horizontal-social-bar horizontal-social-bar-top clearfix\">Wednesday, April 20th, 2016 will mark the six-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion that claimed the lives of eleven men and caused the largest man-made oil spill in history.<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>The cleanup crews\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/environment\/index.ssf\/2014\/04\/bp_ends_active_cleanup_of_loui.html\" target=\"_blank\">abandoned the Gulf Coast years ago<\/a>, claiming that the damage from the spill was \u201cgone\u201d and the media quit paying attention shortly after the wellhead was capped at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the lack of attention paid to the Gulf region in recent years, the lasting damage of the oil spill is something that remains fresh on the minds of everyone that calls this area\u00a0home.<\/p>\n<p>Like most disasters that don\u2019t involve national security issues, Americans tend to operate under the belief that once the media attention has faded the issue is resolved. They don\u2019t understand that the victims of the spill who lost their source of income are still\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/trofire.com\/2016\/04\/12\/bp-gets-off-light-no-justice-for-oil-spill-victims-ed-schultz\/\" target=\"_blank\">fighting court battles against\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">BP<\/span>, Transocean, and Halliburton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They haven\u2019t heard about the sea life with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2014\/3\/24\/5542940\/bp-oil-spill-heart-defects-tuna-amberjack\" target=\"_blank\">abnormal growths and heart defects<\/a>\u00a0linked to the lingering oil and dispersants that have settled on the bottom of the Gulf. And they are unaware that tar mats and tar balls are still common sights on beaches throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick primer on what the Gulf Coast has gone through in the last six years for those who haven\u2019t been paying close attention:<\/p>\n<p>First, we have the real extent of the damage caused by the oil.
