{"id":20046,"date":"2016-04-19T21:01:21","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T02:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=20046"},"modified":"2016-04-19T21:01:22","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T02:01:22","slug":"will-the-international-shipping-industry-finally-set-a-climate-target","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=20046","title":{"rendered":"Will the International Shipping Industry Finally Set a Climate Target?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmog.uk\/2016\/04\/18\/will-international-shipping-industry-finally-set-climate-target\">Will the International Shipping Industry Finally Set a Climate Target?<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10522 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted desktop-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmog.uk\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/shipping_2597603677_59c74820d6_o_LouisVest_flickr.jpg?itok=EGMj_cgz\" alt=\"\" width=\"826\" height=\"549\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"horizontal-social-bar horizontal-social-bar-top clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>Climate change featured heavily at the opening of the International Maritime Organisation\u2019s (<span class=\"caps\">IMO<\/span>) annual marine environment protection meeting in London today.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">IMO<\/span>\u00a0Secretary General Kitack Lim called the Paris climate agreement a \u201clandmark achievement\u201d and said that the organisation \u2013 which sets shipping regulations, including environmental standards, for\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">UN<\/span>\u00a0member states \u2013 has \u201ca major role to play in ensuring the Paris agreement translates into a long lasting improvement in people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is a change of pace for the international shipping industry which, along with aviation, continues to avoid coming under a sector-wide global emissions reduction target.<\/p>\n<p>Contributions from the shipping and aviation industries were notable in their absence from the Paris deal.<\/p>\n<p>This is despite shipping accounting for about three percent of total global carbon emissions (a carbon footprint equal to the size of Germany). And, according to\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">IMO<\/span>\u00a0projections, emissions from shipping may increase by 50-250 percent by 2050 from 2012 levels.<\/p>\n<p>But as Lim told the assembled delegates: \u201cThe absence of any mention of shipping in the text of the agreement will in no way diminish the\u00a0strong commitment of the Organisation\u2026 to continue its work to address greenhouse gas emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lim focused on the Paris agreement throughout his address and reiterated its aspirational goal of limiting global temperature rise below 1.5C.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emissions Targets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At last year\u2019s meeting, the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">IMO<\/span>\u00a0rejected a call by the Marshall Islands to set specific emissions targets.<\/p>\n<p>Since taking over the secretariat in January of this year, however, Lim has appeared more amenable to setting concrete emissions limits. He told\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2016\/02\/02\/un-shipping-chief-climate-change-is-top-priority\/\" target=\"_blank\">Climate Home<\/a><\/em>\u00a0that climate change was a \u201ctop priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the industry has its work cut out for it.
