{"id":19950,"date":"2016-04-14T13:19:34","date_gmt":"2016-04-14T18:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=19950"},"modified":"2016-04-14T13:19:34","modified_gmt":"2016-04-14T18:19:34","slug":"duping-progressives-into-wars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=19950","title":{"rendered":"Duping Progressives into Wars"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2016\/04\/14\/duping-progressives-into-wars\/\">Duping Progressives into Wars<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"entry-meta\"><time class=\"published\" datetime=\"2016-04-14\"><\/time>The online advocacy group, Avaaz, has pulled progressives into support of\u00a0U.S. \u201chumanitarian\u201d wars in Libya and Syria by promoting sweet-sounding ideas like \u201cno-fly zones,\u201d as John Hanrahan explains.<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>In a recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/28\/us\/politics\/hillary-clinton-libya.html?_r=0\"><u>two-part<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/28\/us\/politics\/libya-isis-hillary-clinton.html\"><u>series<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0laid out in detail the pivotal role that then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton played in President Obama\u2019s decision to join in France and Britain\u2019s 2011 military campaign against long-time Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.\u00a0<em>The Times<\/em>\u00a0articles make the case that Clinton bears a heavy part of the responsibility for the tragic, increasingly chaotic aftermath of that campaign in which Gaddafi was ousted and killed.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<em>The Times<\/em>\u00a0summaries of the articles put it, Gaddafi\u2019s fall \u201cseemed to vindicate Hillary Clinton. Then militias refused to disarm, neighbors fanned a civil war, and the Islamic State found refuge,\u201d leaving Libya \u201ca failed state and a terrorist haven.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10332\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/gaddafi-death.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10332\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/gaddafi-death-300x168.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/gaddafi-death-300x168.jpg 300x, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/gaddafi-death.jpg 640x\" alt=\"Ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi shortly before he was murdered on Oct. 20, 2011.\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi shortly before he was murdered on Oct. 20, 2011.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While neocons, right-wingers and humanitarian interventionists back in 2011 were seeking regime change in Libya, there was one non-governmental organization that was alone among progressive groups in mobilizing public opinion around the world in support of military action in\u00a0Libya in the form of \u201ca no-fly zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And this wasn\u2019t just any organization, but the fast-growing, on-line advocacy giant Avaaz.org, which in 2011 had seven million members and today boasts 43.1-million members in 194 countries.
