US scares Europe with \u2018mythical\u2019 Russian threat to justify military costs \u2013 Russian envoy to NATO<\/a><\/h3>\n

The US is using \u201cmythical\u201d Russian aggression as a European boogeyman to justify increasing defense spending while also hoping to revive NATO\u2019s failing mission amid growing global security threat, Russia\u2019s envoy to the alliance exclusively told RT.<\/div>\n

\u201cThe United States and its representatives have repeatedly said that Russia poses a threat to the United States. Many said it was almost an existential threat, but the underlying reason, in my opinion, is obvious,\u201d<\/em>Russia\u2019s permanent envoy to NATO Aleksandr Grushko, said.<\/p>\n

In just one year, the Pentagon\u2019s defense\u00a0budget<\/a>\u00a0request has grown by $2.4 billion. The department is currently hoping for Congressional approval of $582.7 billion. On top of regular expenditures, the sum also includes nearly $60 billion in the overseas contingency operations fund.<\/p>\n

To justify the spending boost, the Pentagon officials have resorted to blaming\u00a0\u201cRussia\u2019s aggression, terrorism by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and others\u201d<\/em>\u00a0as challenges that affected its\u00a0\u201cplanning and budgeting.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

A\u00a0\u201cstrategic threat\u201d<\/em>\u00a0from Russia is one of the reasons why Secretary of Defense Ash Carter is urging\u00a0“practical updates\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to the Pentagon\u2019s organizational framework.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Pentagon announced a plan to increase its troop presence in\u00a0\u201cthe European theater\u201d<\/em>\u00a0of up to three fully-manned Army brigades by the end of 2017, citing\u00a0\u201can aggressive Russia in Eastern Europe and elsewhere.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

However, according to Grushko, Washington is pursuing its internal interests and other goals than protecting its NATO allies, when it cries a\u00a0\u201cRussian threat.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
