{"id":19315,"date":"2016-03-30T14:10:25","date_gmt":"2016-03-30T19:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=19315"},"modified":"2016-03-30T14:10:25","modified_gmt":"2016-03-30T19:10:25","slug":"fracking-contaminates-groundwater-stanford-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=19315","title":{"rendered":"Fracking Contaminates Groundwater: Stanford Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2016\/03\/30\/Stanford-Study-Fracking-Groundwater\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fracking Contaminates Groundwater: Stanford Study<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"tagline\">Another scientific report finds evidence of industry&#8217;s impact on public resource.<\/p>\n<p class=\"meta\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2015\/07\/27\/WinterDrillingWyoming_610px.jpg\" alt=\"WinterDrillingWyoming_610px.jpg\" width=\"610\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"photo-caption\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/pic-95581429\/stock-photo-distant-drill-rig-set-up-for-winter-drilling-in-wyoming.html?src=H5ADjc1S6UGgNxaFav6YfA-1-18\">Drilling photo<\/a>\u00a0via Shutterstock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"block block-article_related\">\n<div class=\"block-inner\">\n<p class=\"title\">Another scientific\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/ipdf\/10.1021\/acs.est.5b04970\">study<\/a>\u00a0has confirmed that fracking, the controversial technology that blasts apart low-grade rocks containing molecules of hydrocarbons, can contaminate groundwater.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We have, for the first time, demonstrated impact to Underground Sources of Drinking Water (USDW) as a result of hydraulic fracturing,&#8221; says the study published in the journal Environmental Science &amp; Technology.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from Stanford University published their findings after combing through publicly available data on the drilling, fracking and cementing of scores of tight gas wells in Pavillion, Wyoming.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the high frequency of injection of stimulation fluids into USDWs to support [coalbed methane] extraction and unknown frequency in tight gas formations, it is unlikely that impact to USDWs is limited to the Pavillion Field, requiring investigation elsewhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The scientists matched chemical compounds used in fracking to chemicals found in two groundwater monitoring wells drilled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>No jurisdiction in Canada has yet set up long-term groundwater monitoring wells to track the movement of contaminants from oil and gas drilling into groundwater.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block block-adspace-full\">\n<div class=\"block-inner\">\n<div class=\"adspace d300x250\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_div_Tyee_In_Story_BigBox_ad_wrapper\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_div_Tyee_In_Story_BigBox_ad_container\">The researchers also discovered that industry fracked directly into aquifers at depths as shallow as 213 metres with highly toxic chemicals, including benzene.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The industry routinely contends that fracking is safe because it is occurring miles underground.<\/p>\n<p>But shallow fracking of coal seams and other formations in Colorado, Wyoming, Alabama and Alberta from the 1980s onward has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2015\/07\/27\/High-Risk-Shallow-Fracking\/\">resulted<\/a>\u00a0in lawsuits, public protests and evidence of extensive groundwater contamination.<\/p>\n<p>The new study also found that different companies in Pavillion, Wyoming used acid and hydraulic fracturing treatments at the same depths as water wells in the area.
