A LAWSUIT FILED\u00a0last\u00a0week in Canada is seeking to halt a major $15 billion sale of light-armored vehicles to the government of Saudi Arabia, part of a growing international movement to stop arms sales to the Saudi government over its\u00a0alleged war crimes in Yemen.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0suit<\/a>, filed by University of Montreal constitutional law professor Daniel Turp, argues the vehicle sales to Saudi Arabia violate a number of Canadian laws, including regulations on the export of military equipment, which prohibit arms sales to countries where human rights are \u201csubject to serious and repeated violations\u201d and there is a reasonable risk exported\u00a0equipment \u201cwill be used against the civilian population.\u201d Saudi Arabia, which has a\u00a0deplorable<\/a>\u00a0human rights\u00a0record<\/a>\u00a0at home, has\u00a0inflicted considerable civilian casualties<\/a>\u00a0in Yemen as part of its yearlong bombing campaign in support of the contested government of President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe suppression of human rights in Saudi Arabia and\u00a0the Saudi government\u2019s actions during the war in Yemen make the sale of these armored vehicles legally unacceptable,\u201d Turp said.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit comes in the wake of growing evidence\u00a0of war crimes by Saudi-led forces, including the use of cluster munitions in civilian areas and the designation of entire cities as military targets. A particularly gruesome attack earlier\u00a0this month\u00a0killed 120 civilians<\/a>\u00a0at a market in the town of Mastaba, including at least 20 children. Last week, in\u00a0response\u00a0to these atrocities, Human Rights Watch demanded that Western countries impose an\u00a0arms embargo<\/a>\u00a0on the Saudi government over its conduct in the war.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia is one of the biggest arms purchasers in the world, spending billions of dollars annually in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere to outfit its military.<\/p>\n
