It\u2019s not just the deterioration in security amidst a wave of terrorism. Public debt might be stable, but\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcmb.gov.tr\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/TCMB+TR\/TCMB+TR\/Main+Menu\/Istatistikler\/Odemeler+Dengesi+ve+Ilgili+Istatistikler\/Ozel+Sektorun+Yurtdisindan+Sagladigi+Kredi+Borcu\/Ozel+Sektorun+Yurtdisindan+Sagladigi+Kredi+Borcu+Gelismeleri\" target=\"_blank\">private debt<\/a>\u00a0is out-of-control, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hurriyetdailynews.com\/lets-accept-2016-as-lost-year-for-turkeys-tourism-sector-.aspx?pageID=238&amp;nID=93886&amp;NewsCatID=540\" target=\"_blank\">tourism sector is in free-fall<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance\/getchart?q=TRYUSD&amp;x=CURRENCY&amp;p=5Y&amp;i=86400\" target=\"_blank\">decline in the currency<\/a>\u00a0has impacted every citizen\u2019s buying power. There is a broad sense, election results notwithstanding, that President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/erdogan-deserves-our-respect\/\" target=\"_blank\">out-of-control<\/a>. He is imprisoning opponents,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/how-to-respond-to-turkeys-press-crackdown\/\" target=\"_blank\">seizing newspapers<\/a>\u00a0left and right, and building palaces at the rate of a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearltrees.com\/s\/pic\/or\/economist-erdogan-democrat-59175980\" target=\"_blank\">mad sultan<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/is-erdogans-end-goal-a-caliphate\/\" target=\"_blank\">aspiring caliph<\/a>. In recent weeks, he has once again threatened to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/turkeys-optional-constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\">dissolve the constitutional court<\/a>. Corruption is rife. His son Bilal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/awdnews.com\/top-news\/rome%E2%80%99s-police-spokesman-saudi-embassy-helped-erdo%C4%9Fan%E2%80%99s-son-to-escape-the-police-custody-using-a-forged-saudi-passport-and-disguised-as-an-arab-diplomat\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly fled Italy<\/a>\u00a0on a forged Saudi diplomatic passport as the Italian police closed in on him in an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/bilal-erdogan-italy-investigates-turkish-presidents-son-over-money-laundering-allegedly-connected-to-a6879871.html\" target=\"_blank\">alleged money laundering<\/a>\u00a0scandal. His outbursts are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-29895166\" target=\"_blank\">raising eyebrows<\/a>\u00a0both in Turkey and abroad. Even members of his ruling party whisper about his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/turkeys-miscarriage-of-justice\/2012\/09\/21\/e2125276-033d-11e2-8102-ebee9c66e190_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">increasing paranoia<\/a>\u00a0which, according to some Turkish officials, has gotten so bad that he seeks to install anti-aircraft missiles at his palace to prevent airborne men-in-black from targeting him in a snatch-and-grab operation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_878788\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/RTSBACA-e1458567455511.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-878788\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-878788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/RTSBACA-e1458567455511.png\" alt=\"Pedestrians walk along Istiklal street, a major shopping and tourist district, in central Istanbul, Turkey March 20, 2016, a day after a suicide bomb attack. By first bestowing legitimacy upon imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah \u00d6calan with renewed negotiations and then precipitating renewed conflict, he has taken Turkey down a path in which there is no chance of victory and a high chance of\u00a0<em>de facto\u00a0<\/em>partition.
