Polywoda<\/a>\u00a0via Flickr<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article_content \">\n<div class=\"ssba ssba-wrap\"><strong>The link between global economic growth and emissions growth has been further weakened as greenhouse gas levels show no increase for the second year in succession.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><em>LONDON, 18 March, 2016<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 The world continued to make progress towards a low-carbon economy during 2015, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iea.org\/newsroomandevents\/pressreleases\/2016\/march\/decoupling-of-global-emissions-and-economic-growth-confirmed.html\" target=\"_blank\">analysis by the International Energy Agency<\/a>\u00a0(IEA).<\/p>\n<p>It says analysis of preliminary data for the year reveals that global energy-related emissions of carbon dioxide \u2212 the largest source of man-made greenhouse gas emissions \u2212 showed no increase for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n<p>The IEA announcement will be doubly welcome as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/mar\/15\/record-breaking-temperatures-have-robbed-the-arctic-of-its-winter\" target=\"_blank\">some Arctic temperatures continue to warm bizarrely<\/a>. It comes a day after reports from Fort Yukon in Alaska said temperatures there had reached up to 10\u00b0C higher than expected for this time of year.<\/p>\n<p>Fatih Birol, the IEA\u2019s executive director, said of the emissions report: \u201cThe new figures confirm last year\u2019s surprising but welcome news. We now have seen two straight years of greenhouse gas emissions decoupling from economic growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Landmark agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing just a few months after the landmark\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/2860.php\" target=\"_blank\">COP21 agreement in Paris<\/a>, this is yet another boost to the global fight against climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Significantly, the global economy continued to grow in 2015 by more than 3%, which the IEA says is further evidence that the link between economic growth and emissions growth is weakening.<\/p>\n<p>In more than 40 years, it says, there have been only four periods in which emissions stood still or fell compared to the previous year. Three of those \u2013 the early 1980s, 1992 and 2009 \u2013 were associated with global economic weakness.<\/p>\n<p>But the recent stall in emissions comes amid economic expansion.
