What was said was so far away from the physical reality that I experience here on Earth that I was left wondering if they were talking about the same planet. So I have done a little digging.<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Everyone who can should try and watch the 5 minute clip. The link takes you to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/catch-up\" target=\"blank\">news catch up page<\/a>. Select Monday 14 March and the clip titled \u201cIs Global warming Quickening?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euanmearns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LOTI.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.euanmearns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LOTI.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Figure 1<\/strong>\u00a0The NASA GISS LOTI\u00a0(Land Ocean Temperature Index) graphic shown on Channel 4 News. This image bears no resemblance at all to the current NOAA SST image that appears immediately below the fold.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sea Surface Temperatures (SST)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let us begin by comparing the NASA GISS LOTI (Land Ocean Temperature Index) with current\u00a0\u00a0SSTs.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euanmearns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/anomnight.3.14.2016.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.euanmearns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/anomnight.3.14.2016.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Figure 2<\/strong>\u00a0The full global SSTs as recorded\u00a0on 14 March 2016. NOAA SSTs downloaded from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ospo.noaa.gov\/Products\/ocean\/sst\/anomaly\/\" target=\"blank\">this link<\/a>. If anything I\u2019m more concerned by all that blue. The dying remnants of the El Nino along the Equator cover a vast area that is not captured by this projection while the cold southern ocean covers a relatively small area.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The SSTs present a totally different picture. In fact a worryingly cool picture with the N Atlantic now looking as cool as I\u2019ve seen it, a likely refection of the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO) preparing to flip to cool mode. The N Pacific and whole of the Southern Ocean are distinctly cool. How they manage to manufacture record warmth out of this is a story for another day. But how do Figures 1 and 2 appear so different.
