Humanize the downturn.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrap8 story-bodywrapper sclt-storybody\">\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-content\">\n<p>Harsh economic numbers coming out of Alberta aren&#8217;t hard to find. A projected deficit of $10.4 billion. An unemployment rate of 7.4 per cent, the highest mark since 1996.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a id=\"morestory-headline-1.3487296\" title=\"7:54 AM ET \u2014 Albertans are struggling as the energy industry continues to sputter. Making matters worse, there is a pervasive feeling that some Canadians enjoy watching the province's hard times. But does the rest of Canada really take pleasure in Alberta's pain?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/alberta-oil-canada-poll-1.3487296\">Are Canadians enjoying Alberta&#8217;s reversal of fortune? Nope<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/cbc-ekos-poll-energy-economy-country-conflicted-1.3483312\">Canadians conflicted about 3 Es: Environment, energy and the economy<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/alberta-calgary-consumer-debt-equifax-1.3484940\">Albertans have highest debt load in Canada, Equifax says<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then there was the startling projection<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/conference-board-canada-alberta-gdp-shrink-2016-1.3480805\">\u00a0from the Conference Board of Canada last week<\/a>\u00a0that Alberta will be the only province to see its economy shrink in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>But what do these figures mean for people? How the downturn affects individual lives is much harder to figure out.<\/p>\n<p>It is not always easy to get people to talk about these kinds of things. People who&#8217;ve just lost their jobs are busy trying to find another one, or they&#8217;re embarrassed by their situations.<\/p>\n<p>But here are three people who agreed to speak to us and share some of their personal experiences during Alberta&#8217;s current downturn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warren Sonnenberg, Camrose\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"figure\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.3487458.1457721506!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_620\/warren-sonnenberg.jpg\" alt=\"Warren Sonnenberg\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">Warren Sonnenberg, in Camrose, says one of the harder things is having friends and neighbours who are too upset to talk about their own situations. (CBC)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sonnenberg, 35, worked for five years on a drilling rig in the oil patch. He started at the bottom as a leasehand and worked his way up to derrickhand. Before he was laid off in January he was making $40 an hour.
