It is\u00a0on a bluff 30 feet above the\u00a0Bogue Falaya River, in an area that is not considered a flood zone.<\/p>\n<p>But that didn\u2019t stop a flash flood from\u00a0forcing Unglaub to swim for his life to get to higher ground awaiting rescue last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one is safe from extreme weather,\u201d\u00a0Unglaub told\u00a0DeSmog on Sunday\u00a0when he returned to sort through his belongings to see what, if anything, was salvageable.<\/p>\n<p>After two days of intermittent rain, 14 inches of rain fell Friday night.\u00a0This extreme weather event took place 12 days before the\u00a0Department of the Interior\u2019s\u00a0Bureau of Land Management (<span class=\"caps\">BLM<\/span>) will auction drilling leases to 43 million acres of federal waters in the Gulf of\u00a0Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">VIDEO<\/span>:\u00a0Walter Unglaub returns home for the first time after the floodwaters drop<br \/>\n<span class=\"player\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OUS8DotCBxI\" width=\"810\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/theadvocate.com\/news\/15166566-148\/flood-updates-in-new-orleans-area-50-in-covington-rescued-overnight-as-flood-levels-quickly-rose\" target=\"_blank\">Initial records released<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0the Governor\u2019s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness say about\u00a05,000 homes in Louisiana sustained flood damage following a deluge. The count is likely to grow as\u00a0the damage assessment in Southeast Louisiana is not complete.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/editor.desmogblog.com:8000\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/J46A0478-Edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Rescue crews evacuate residents in the Tallow Creek subdivision to safety.\u00a0\u00a9 2016 Julie Dermansky<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From Tangipahoa, St Tammany and Washington Parishes,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theadvocate.com\/news\/15166566-148\/flood-updates-in-new-orleans-area-50-in-covington-rescued-overnight-as-flood-levels-quickly-rose\" target=\"_blank\">1,500 residents were\u00a0rescued<\/a>\u00a0by the time the Tchefuncte River and Bogue Falaya River peaked on Saturday morning.
