(Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrap8 story-bodywrapper sclt-storybody\">\n<div id=\"sharecount_gig_containerParent\" class=\"story-middle col2\">\n<div id=\"sharecount\" class=\"sclt-share\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1457715041225_15\" class=\"gig-bar-container gig-share-bar-container\">The ratio of household debt to disposable income hit a new record in the fourth quarter of last year.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-content\">\n<p>Statistics Canada says the ratio rose to 165.4 per cent in the fourth quarter, up from 164.5 per cent in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p>That means Canadian households on average held $1.65 in debt for every dollar of disposable income.<\/p>\n<p>Much of that new\u00a0debt came in the form of mortgages. &#8220;Most of the growth was in mortgage credit, up 6.3 per cent, which has accelerated considerably since 2014 and is now increasing at the fastest pace since late 2012,&#8221; \u00a0TD Bank economist Diana Petramala said.<\/p>\n<p>The increase came as disposable income increased 0.6 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>However, total household credit market debt, which includes consumer credit and mortgage and non-mortgage loans, increased 1.2 per cent to $1.923 trillion at the end of last year.<\/p>\n<p>The total included $573.6 million in consumer credit debt and $1.262 trillion in mortgage debt.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thecanadianpress-a.akamaihd.net\/graphics\/2016\/static\/cp-household-debt-ratio-2015-q4.png\" alt=\"HOUSEHOLD DEBT RATIO\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-bylinefooter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a9 The Canadian Press, 2016<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/gfx\/icon_cponline07.gif\" alt=\"The Canadian Press\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"storytools\" class=\"wrap8 clearfix sclt-share\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"colfull\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada&#8217;s debt-to-income ratio sets new record high at 165% Canadians now owe $1.65 for every dollar of income they have at their disposal.
