Geoengineers will not be able to magic away the rising tides, according to new research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In particular, they will not be able\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/emb_releases\/2016-03\/pifc-srt030716.php\" target=\"_blank\">to pump water from the sea and store it as ice<\/a>\u00a0on the continent of Antarctica. That is because, unless they pump it enormous distances, that will only accelerate the flow of the glaciers and it will all end up back in the sea again, a study in the journal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.earth-syst-dynam.net\/7\/203\/2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">Earth System Dynamics<\/a>\u00a0says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Geoengineering is sometimes produced as the high-technology solution to the environmental problems of climate change: if humans don\u2019t change their ways and start reducing greenhouse gas emissions, say the proponents of technofix, human ingenuity will no doubt devise a different answer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But, repeatedly, closer examination has made such solutions ever less plausible. Scientists have dismissed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/no-green-light-for-whitening-arctics-melting-ice\/\" target=\"_blank\">the idea that the melting of the Arctic can be reversed<\/a>,\u00a0have only tentatively conceded that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/climate-stirred-ancient-political-turmoil\/\" target=\"_blank\">technology could dampen the force of a hurricane<\/a>,<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0and have found that\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u2013<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0instead of cooling the Earth \u2013 attempts to control climate change could either\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/geo-engineering-could-mean-more-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\">make things worse<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/geo-engineering-could-upset-rainfall\/\" target=\"_blank\">seriously disrupt rainfall patterns<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0On balance, scientists believe that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/climate-technofixes-will-not-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">most of the big geo-engineering ideas won\u2019t work<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Deep freeze<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And now a team from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research has poured cold water on the idea of pouring cold water onto the ice cap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The idea is a simple one. Are sea levels rising 3mm a year because the world is warming?
