(Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrap8 story-bodywrapper sclt-storybody\">\n<div id=\"sharecount_gig_containerParent\" class=\"story-middle col2\">\n<div id=\"sharecount\" class=\"sclt-share\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_11_0_2_1457631607575_12\" class=\"gig-bar-container gig-share-bar-container\">Albertans have the highest average debt load in the country\u00a0at more than $27,000, says\u00a0Equifax\u00a0Canada.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-content\">\n<p>A study released this morning says consumer debt\u00a0delinquencies in the province\u00a0jumped 25 per cent over the same quarter last year.<\/p>\n<p>But the nationwide delinquency rate didn&#8217;t change, and\u00a0Equifax Canada says rates remain at historic lows.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite the ups and downs of today&#8217;s economy we&#8217;re seeing that Canadians are generally able to manage debt and rein in spending when they have to,&#8221; Regina Malina, the senior director of decision insights at Equifax Canada, said in a release.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It may be a surprise to some, but the fact is delinquency rates in the oil-producing provinces are still relatively low. Most people are still finding a way to pay back what they owe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Average provincial debt (excluding mortgages)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ontario: $21,072<\/li>\n<li>Quebec: $18,070<\/li>\n<li>Nova Scotia: $21,709<\/li>\n<li>New Brunswick: $22,107<\/li>\n<li>PEI: $21,483<\/li>\n<li>Newfoundland: $22,766<\/li>\n<li>Alberta: $27,576 25<\/li>\n<li>Manitoba: $17,913<\/li>\n<li>Saskatchewan: $23,941<\/li>\n<li>British Columbia: $23,040<\/li>\n<li><strong>Canada: $21,458\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Average debt in Calgary is $28,421 excluding mortgages, while Edmonton&#8217;s average debt is $26,479 compared to average consumer debt nationwide of $21,458.<\/p>\n<p>The only age category to experience an\u00a0increase in delinquency rates in the last quarter of 2015 was the\u00a0under-26 group. The rate for that category\u00a0rose 2.9 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Debt is often used as a tool for consumers to accomplish their objectives.
