{"id":18602,"date":"2016-03-08T11:37:18","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T16:37:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=18602"},"modified":"2016-03-08T11:37:18","modified_gmt":"2016-03-08T16:37:18","slug":"fracking-supply-chain-a-climate-disaster-doing-little-to-uplift-poor-communities-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=18602","title":{"rendered":"Fracking Supply Chain a Climate Disaster, Doing Little to Uplift Poor Communities: Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2016\/03\/07\/studies-fracking-supply-chain-climate-disaster-no-uplift-poor-communities\" target=\"_blank\">Fracking Supply Chain a Climate Disaster, Doing Little to Uplift Poor Communities: Studies\u00a0<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10378 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted desktop-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/549px-Marcellus_Shale_Gas_Drilling_Tower_1_crop.jpg?itok=IkKQw8ks\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"horizontal-social-bar horizontal-social-bar-top clearfix\">Two recent studies further call into question the oil and gas industry&#8217;s claims of the climate benefits and community benefits of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/fracking-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">hydraulic fracturing (\u201cfracking\u201d)<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>One of those studies, published in Environmental Research Letters and titled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Just%20fracking-%20a%20distributive%20environmental%20justice%20analysis%20of%20unconventional%20gas%20development%20in%20Pennsylvania%2C%20USA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Just fracking: a distributive environmental justice analysis of unconventional gas development in Pennsylvania,\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span><\/a>,\u201d concludes that \u201cthe income distribution of the population nearer to shale gas wells has not been transformed since shale gas development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The other, a report released by Environmental Integrity Project titled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Petrochemical%20Industry%20Pollution.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Greenhouse Gases from a Growing Petrochemical Industry<\/a>,\u201d examines the post-fracking supply chain and concludes that the petrochemical industry&#8217;s planned construction and expansion projects announced in 2015 alone are the \u201cpollution equivalent to the emissions from 19 coal-fired power\u00a0plants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not Quite\u00a0\u201cShaleionaires\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two academics from outside of the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0and employed by the United Kingdom&#8217;s\u00a0Newcastle University\u00a0published the\u00a0fracking environmental justice report.\u00a0Lead author\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/gps\/staff\/profile\/emily.clough\" target=\"_blank\">Emily Clough<\/a>\u00a0serves as a political science lecturer at Newcastle, while co-author\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/gps\/staff\/profile\/derek.bell\" target=\"_blank\">Derek Bell<\/a>\u00a0serves as a professor of environmental political\u00a0theory.<\/p>\n<p>Both of them undertook an effort, as they write in the study&#8217;s introduction, to examine \u201cincome distribution and level of education in addition to race and poverty\u201d and how these juxtaposed communities fared both \u201cbefore and after shale gas development.\u201d As it turns out, if you are poor and live in close proximity to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/5401\" target=\"_blank\">Marcellus Shale<\/a>\u00a0basin oil or gas well, you will receive some economic benefit \u2014 but not a very big one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the 2009\u20132013 data, we found that the percentage of those living below the poverty threshold was slightly lower in areas close to unconventional wells than in areas further away,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThis difference is small but statistically significant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fracking Supply Chain a Climate Disaster, Doing Little to Uplift Poor Communities: Studies\u00a0 Two recent studies further call into question the oil and gas industry&#8217;s claims of the climate benefits and community benefits of\u00a0hydraulic fracturing (\u201cfracking\u201d).
