As\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2015\/04\/xi-jinping-china-corruption-political-culture\/389787\/\">The Atlantic wrote last year<\/a>, the discipline \u201cproblem\u201d is \u201cmade more urgent by a slowing economy,\u201d an economy which desperately needs to be reformed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cReform, however, requires the ability to enact policy,\u201d The Atlantic flatly adds. \u201cThat in turn necessitates bureaucrats who follow the central government\u2019s orders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Publicly there have been more than 1,500 announced cases against party officials<\/strong>. But that\u2019s just \u201cpublicly.\u201d Knowing the Party\u2019s reputation for \u201cdisappearing\u201d those who \u201cdisappoint\u201d or otherwise act in morally objectionable ways, the real number is impossible to know but is likely orders of magnitude higher.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When China\u2019s stock market began to crash last summer as the country\u2019s margin &#8220;miracle&#8221; finally buckled under the weight of the millions of illiterate daytrading housewives who poured their life savings into everything from umbrella manufacturers to industrial companies-turned P2P outfits, Beijing extended the corruption probe to those \u201cresponsible\u201d for the equity meltdown.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Soon,\u00a0<strong>the quest for stock market \u201cmanipulators\u201d and those (like journalists) who would otherwise seek to harm the national interest by, well, by reporting the facts became part and parcel of a kind of mini Tigers and Flies campaign focused specifically on China\u2019s financial markets<\/strong>.
