The problem was obvious; any credible witness to a rogue wave usually didn\u2019t survive the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rogue_wave\" target=\"_blank\">rogue wave<\/a>, thereby relegating the actual phenomenon to the looney tunes category by the so-called \u2018<em>experts<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In an authoritarian culture only the authorities can declare something \u2018<em>real<\/em>\u2019 regardless of how much evidence has been previously offered. It took an actual \u2018<em>scientific<\/em>\u2019 measurement in the North Sea off Norway on New Year\u2019s Day, 1995 aboard the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.statoil.com\/en\/ouroperations\/explorationprod\/partneroperatedfields\/draupner\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Draupner platform\u00a0<\/a>to convince the scientists (aka the authorities) there really was such a thing as a rogue wave.<span id=\"more-14064\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The charted output of that instrumented event, described as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draupner_wave\" target=\"_blank\">Draupner wave<\/a>, is seen below and clearly indicates an extreme aberration, a bolt of lightning out of the blue if you will, a single wave easily twice the average height of the largest waves and three to four times the average height of the smallest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14065\" src=\"http:\/\/twoicefloes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Draupner-Wave-Graph-Final.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1032px) 100vw, 1032px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/twoicefloes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Draupner-Wave-Graph-Final-150x76.png 150x, http:\/\/twoicefloes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Draupner-Wave-Graph-Final-300x152.png 300x, http:\/\/twoicefloes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Draupner-Wave-Graph-Final-768x390.png 768x, http:\/\/twoicefloes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Draupner-Wave-Graph-Final-1024x520.png 1024x, http:\/\/twoicefloes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Draupner-Wave-Graph-Final-600x305.png 600x, http:\/\/twoicefloes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Draupner-Wave-Graph-Final.png 1032x\" alt=\"Draupner Wave Graph - Final\" width=\"1032\" height=\"524\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Measured from the trough to crest, the Draupner Wave was nearly 25 meters\/84 feet tall.<\/p>\n<p>Since the impact force of a wave is an exponential function of its height, you can clearly understand why no modern ship is designed to survive a direct hit from a wave of this magnitude. 15 meter\/49 foot waves from\u00a0trough\u00a0to\u00a0crest\u00a0is the current design standard, while the Draupner was nearly 25m\/82ft tall, thus the reason for rarity of eye witnesses to these events.
