It\u2019s for these reasons that the Ontario government adopted the principle of \u201cConservation First\u201d in its recent Long Term Energy Plan. The government rightly sees that increased conservation is a win for everyone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.3em; margin: 0px 0px 10px 0px;\">Unfortunately, as\u00a0<a style=\"color: #111111; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/environmentaldefence.ca\/reports\/powering-efficiency-get-conservation-framework-right\">our new study<\/a>\u00a0shows, the push for conservation may fail somewhere between vision and implementation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.3em; margin: 0px 0px 10px 0px;\">The Ontario Energy Board (OEB), the organization that oversees the natural gas companies &#8211; Enbridge and Union Gas &#8211; \u00a0was directed by the Minister of Energy to develop new rules (called a \u201cframework\u201d) to enable \u201call cost-effective conservation.\u201d \u00a0Essentially this means creating a system to fund conservation programs in all cases where the costs of a new purchase, such as a furnace, are more than offset by the energy cost savings resulting from the purchase.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.3em; margin: 0px 0px 10px 0px;\">But the OEB appears prepared to all but ignore the Minister\u2019s directive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.3em; margin: 0px 0px 10px 0px;\">&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Will Ontario miss the boat on energy conservation? | &#8211; Environmental Defence.
