(Paul Chiasson\/Canadian Press)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrap8 story-bodywrapper sclt-storybody\">\n<div id=\"sharecount_gig_containerParent\" class=\"story-middle col2\">\n<div id=\"sharecount\" class=\"sclt-share\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1456076782709_15\" class=\"gig-bar-container gig-share-bar-container\">Fruit and veggie lovers\u00a0have seen their\u00a0pocketbooks pinched over this past year\u00a0as the\u00a0precious produce spiked in price,\u00a0prompting an\u00a0overall increase in food costs.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-content\">\n<p>&#8220;Well, obviously\u00a0the weak\u00a0loonie\u00a0has had an impact on produce and fruit prices,&#8221; said\u00a0Sylvain Charlebois, professor of marketing and\u00a0consumer studies at\u00a0the\u00a0University of Guelph Food Institute. &#8220;They&#8217;ve\u00a0gone\u00a0up\u00a0significanty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/beef-industry-prices-eating-habits-retail-chicken-1.3454160\">Beef prices begin sudden fall from record highs<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/inflation-january-1.3454993\">Higher food and gas prices push inflation to its highest level since 2014<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/food-prices-2016-1.3358980\">7 foods that will cost you more in 2016 and why<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/pub\/62-001-x\/62-001-x2016001-eng.pdf\">According to the Consumer Price Index,\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>released by Statistics Canada on Friday,\u00a0food prices increased\u00a0by four per cent in January 2016, compared to the same month a year earlier.\u00a0But\u00a0fresh vegetables were up 18 per cent over that period, while the price of tomatoes alone\u00a0shot up 30 per cent from the previous month.<\/p>\n<p>Lettuce was up nearly 18 per cent in January, compared to a year earlier, while other fresh vegetables,\u00a0including\u00a0broccoli, cauliflower, celery and peppers,\u00a0registered their largest year-over-year increase since April 2009, rising 23 per cent over the previous\u00a0year.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh fruit was up nearly 13 per cent for the year, with apples rising 16.6 per cent\u00a0and\u00a0oranges 11.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Driven by the weakened currency&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Clearly many importers had to procure some\u00a0produce outside of North America and that really increases transportation costs,&#8221; Charlebois said. &#8220;Peppers\u00a0\u2014\u00a0we&#8217;ve had to go to Europe to get some of those products \u2014\u00a0so that&#8217;s why some products have increased by more than 30 per cent in a month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fruit and vegetable prices hike overall food costs Food prices increased by four per cent over the year, largely because of the low loonie According to the Consumer Price Index, food prices increased by four per cent from Jan. 2015 to Jan. 2016.
