{"id":18004,"date":"2016-02-19T11:25:36","date_gmt":"2016-02-19T16:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=18004"},"modified":"2016-02-19T11:25:36","modified_gmt":"2016-02-19T16:25:36","slug":"united-states-on-path-to-becoming-major-exporter-of-natural-gas-despite-climate-impacts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=18004","title":{"rendered":"United States On Path to Becoming Major Exporter of Natural Gas Despite Climate Impacts"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2016\/02\/17\/united-states-path-becoming-major-exporter-natural-gas-despite-climate-impacts\" target=\"_blank\">United States On Path to Becoming Major Exporter of Natural Gas Despite Climate Impacts<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10323 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted desktop-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/J46A0595-Edit-4_2.jpg?itok=yre7IFkA\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"484\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"horizontal-social-bar horizontal-social-bar-top clearfix\">The Sabine Pass\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LNG<\/span>\u00a0terminal owned by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cheniere.com\/terminals\/sabine-pass\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cheniere Energy<\/a>\u00a0in southwest Louisiana offers a glimpse of the challenges facing the growing natural gas industry in the United States.<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\nThe first cargo of liquefied natural gas (<span class=\"caps\">LNG<\/span>) was scheduled for export from Cheniere Energy\u2019s new export terminal in Cameron Parish, in January, but the company reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-01-14\/cheniere-delays-first-lng-cargo-export-to-late-february-or-march\" target=\"_blank\">delayed its plans<\/a>\u00a0by up to two months due\u00a0to faulty wiring.<\/p>\n<p>Following the announcement of\u00a0the\u00a0export delay,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-01-22\/cheniere-said-to-seek-2-6-billion-to-refinance-lng-import-plant\" target=\"_blank\">Cheniere Energy sought $2.6 billion to refinance<\/a>\u00a0its adjacent\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LNG<\/span>\u00a0import terminal in Cameron Parish which was impacted by extreme fluctuations in the price of oil and gas. The company built the import facility before the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0fracking boom took hold, and was therefore saddled with unnecessary import infrastructure in the new age of abundance of domestic gas availability and the prospect of\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0exports.<\/p>\n<p>Cheniere&#8217;s $20 billion, multiphase terminal is one of four\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LNG<\/span>\u00a0terminals in the lower 48 states that got the green light from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. And the existing Kenai\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LNG<\/span>\u00a0plant in Alaska, an export terminal operated by\u00a0ConocoPhillips, was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-conocophillips-lng-alaska-idUSKCN0VJ02T\" target=\"_blank\">recently permitted to restart operations after closing down in 2013, when<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.platts.com\/latest-news\/shipping\/anchorage\/conocophillips-to-resume-lng-exports-from-kenai-21478299\" target=\"_blank\">operations ceased due to a shortage of gas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chenier Energy project, as well as the over 40 proposed or approved\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LNG<\/span>\u00a0export facilities around the United States, are a serious threat to our climate,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/healthygulf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gulf Restoration Network<\/a>\u00a0organizer\u00a0Johanna deGraffenreid told DeSmog.
