Defense ministers from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2015\/12\/03\/nato-picks-a-new-fight-with-russia\/\"><u>enlarged<\/u><\/a>, 28-member organization agreed recently to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/nato-agrees-on-stronger-eastern-flank-against-russia\/a-19038835\"><u>strengthen<\/u><\/a>\u00a0the alliance\u2019s \u201cforward presence\u201d in Eastern Europe. If their new policy is endorsed at a summit in Poland this summer, NATO will begin\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/deterrence-in-eastern-europe-top-of-the-agenda-at-nato-meeting\/a-19038013\"><u>deploying thousands of troops<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in Poland and the Baltic states, right up against Russia\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the Western alliance will\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/nato-agrees-on-stronger-eastern-flank-against-russia\/a-19038835\"><u>redouble its military commitment<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to a Polish government whose\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2016\/jan\/17\/poland-rightwing-government-eu-russia-democracy-under-threat\"><u>right-wing, anti-Russian, and autocratic<\/u><\/a>\u00a0policies are so egregious that even the stanchly neo-conservative editorial page of the\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0saw fit to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/polands-new-right-wing-leaders-cross-a-line\/2015\/12\/22\/54d42ea4-a8d3-11e5-8058-480b572b4aae_story.html\"><u>condemn<\/u><\/a>\u00a0the new leaders\u2019 encroachments on democracy and the rule of law.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17202\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/sigla_nato_1.jpg?82332e\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17202\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17202\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/sigla_nato_1-300x162.jpg?82332e\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/sigla_nato_1-300x162.jpg 300x, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/sigla_nato_1-260x140.jpg 260x, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/sigla_nato_1.jpg 400x\" alt=\"NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Worse yet, NATO\u2019s provocative commitment will include a potential threat to start World War III on behalf of that government. Most Americans are unaware that NATO\u2019s policies \u2014 reaffirmed by the Obama administration \u2014 view nuclear weapons as a \u201ccore component\u201d of the alliance\u2019s capacity to repel even a conventional attack on one of its member states.<\/p>\n<p>An accidental clash of forces, perhaps triggered by military exercises gone awry, could potentially lead NATO to use its nuclear weapons against Russian troops on Poland\u2019s borders. Or, just as catastrophically, it could prompt Russian forces to attack NATO\u2019s nuclear stockpiles preemptively.<\/p>\n<p>Either scenario could trigger a much wider nuclear war.
