And amazingly under the radar for the most part \u2014 until the trains started derailing and blowing up \u2014 leading to articles with titles like \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/pause.nationbuilder.com\/the_invisible_bomb_trains\" target=\"_blank\">The Invisible Bomb Trains.<\/a>\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\nIn 2014, Terry Wechsler, an environmental attorney in northwest Washington, summed up why there hadn\u2019t been opposition to the initial oil-by-rail terminals on the west coast,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/crude-railway-washington-idUSL1N0OE2DM20140530\" target=\"_blank\">telling Reuters<\/a>, \u201cThere was no opposition to the other three proposals only because we weren&#8217;t aware they were in formal permitting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But now the public knows. And despite public relations efforts by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/editorials\/2016\/01\/17\/1-safety-is-railroad-agencys-top-concern.html\" target=\"_blank\">regulators\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/story\/opinion\/readers\/2016\/01\/15\/letter-safety-freight-rail-industry-priority\/78869834\/?from=global&amp;sessionKey=&amp;autologin=\" target=\"_blank\">industry lobbyists<\/a>, the public also knows that the crude oil \u201cbomb trains\u201d still pose a huge risk to communities along the rail\u00a0lines.<\/p>\n<p>The National Transportation Safety Board (<span class=\"caps\">NTSB<\/span>) recently released its Top 10 Most Wanted List for 2016, and the list included addressing oil train risks. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/trafficandcommuting\/ntsbs-10-most-wanted-list-for-2016-underscores-need-for-rail-safety\/2016\/01\/13\/be3d1a8e-ba19-11e5-829c-26ffb874a18d_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post reported<\/a>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">NTSB<\/span>\u00a0chairman Christopher Hart\u2019s concerns regarding oil trains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been lucky thus far that derailments involving flammable liquids in America have not yet occurred in a populated area,\u201d Hart said. \u201cBut an American version of Lac-M\u00e9gantic could happen at any time.
