{"id":17663,"date":"2016-02-11T13:25:56","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T18:25:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=17663"},"modified":"2016-02-11T13:25:56","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T18:25:56","slug":"janet-yellen-admits-fed-is-evaluating-possibility-of-negative-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=17663","title":{"rendered":"Janet Yellen Admits Fed Is Evaluating Possibility Of Negative Rates"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2016-02-11\/janet-yellen-admits-fed-evaluating-possibility-negative-rates\" target=\"_blank\">Janet Yellen Admits Fed Is Evaluating Possibility Of Negative Rates<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"node\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>One week before the BOJ shocked the world by adopting negative interest rates and unleashed the next leg lower in global risk assets, it warned everyone &#8220;<em>please not to worry, all is under control<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-japan-economy-boj-idUSKCN0UZ0AN\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user5\/imageroot\/2016\/01-overflow\/BOJ%20no%20nirp_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"114\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moments ago at least Yellen had the courtesy of &#8220;warning&#8221; market participants in general, and banks and savers in particular that legal, logistical or monetary concerns aside, the Fed is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-02-11\/yellen-says-fed-evaluating-possibility-of-negative-rates-in-u-s\">already evaluating the possibility\u00a0<\/a>of negative rates.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">&#8220;We had previously considered them and decided that they would not work well to foster accommodation back in 2010. In light of the experience of European countries and others that have gone to negative rates,\u00a0<strong>we\u2019re taking a look at them again because we would want to be prepared in the event that we needed to add accommodation.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-02-08\/fed-may-lack-legal-authority-for-negative-rates-2010-fed-memo\">Bloomberg reported\u00a0<\/a>first earlier this week, a Fed staff memo posted on the central bank\u2019s website last month showed Fed economists grappled with a number of issues related to implementation of negative rates at the time, including possible legal obstacles.
