{"id":17378,"date":"2016-02-04T11:25:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-04T16:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=17378"},"modified":"2016-02-04T11:25:19","modified_gmt":"2016-02-04T16:25:19","slug":"cattle-deaths-spark-renewed-oil-drilling-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=17378","title":{"rendered":"Cattle Deaths Spark Renewed Oil Drilling Controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Energy-General\/Cattle-Deaths-Spark-Renewed-Oil-Drilling-Controversy.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cattle Deaths Spark Renewed Oil Drilling Controversy<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"column75-25 clear\">\n<div class=\"column75-25_1\">\n<div id=\"article-content\" class=\"wysiwyg clear\">\n<p>Following the mysterious death of seven cattle near an oil field in Kansas, public health authorities are investigating whether oil drilling could be the cause.<\/p>\n<p>In late December, seven dead cattle were found near an oil field in the Cimarron National Grassland, Kansas, and authorities believe that cows inhaled something toxic, prompting them to deny public access to the 2,500-acre Cimarron National Grassland until at least May.<\/p>\n<p>Six of the cattle were discovered together in a low-lying area, while a seventh was found a short distance away, with local veterinarians identifying the ingestion or inhalation of something toxic leading to pulmonary edema or fluid in the lungs as a possible cause, though the cause of death has not been officially declared.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, they suspect the cattle may have inhaled hydrogen sulfide\u2014a toxic gas that can be released in the oil and gas drilling process. They haven\u2019t pinpointed the cause officially, but it was enough to implement an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/alerts\/psicc\/alerts-notices\/?aid=32060\">emergency order<\/a>\u00a0to halt public access to the area for a prolonged period.<\/p>\n<p>While the general public is denied access to the grassland, oil and gas companies operating in the Stirrup Oil Field area here are still operational, including Anadarko Petroleum, Merit Energy and Argent Energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is kind of a unique situation we\u2019re dealing with and I\u2019m honestly afraid we\u2019ll never find the answer,\u201d local veterinarian Tera Barnhardt told media.<\/p>\n<p>It would not be the first mysterious cattle deaths\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/msucares.com\/pubs\/publications\/p2621.pdf\">tentatively linked to oil and gas drilling.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2012,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefern.org\/2012\/11\/livestock-falling-ill-in-fracking-regions-raising-concerns-about-food\/\">140 cattle<\/a>\u00a0were exposed to fracking wastewater in northcentral Pennsylvania when an impoundment was breached. Approximately 70 cows died, and the remainder produced only 11 calves, of which three survived.
