(Canadian Press)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrap8 story-bodywrapper sclt-storybody\">\n<div id=\"sharecount_gig_containerParent\" class=\"story-middle col2\">\n<div id=\"sharecount\" class=\"sclt-share\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1454553704873_15\" class=\"gig-bar-container gig-share-bar-container\">(Note: CBC does not endorse and is not responsible for the content of external links.)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-content\">\n<p>The Calgary-based company planning to build the Energy East pipeline says it has signed a provisional multimillion-dollar order for the construction of 22 modular enclosures along the pipeline route.<\/p>\n<p>TransCanada\u00a0Corp.\u00a0officials say their deal with ABB Canada would create 120 direct jobs in Quebec and a further 90 spinoff jobs outside the greater Montreal area.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s a catch:\u00a0the jobs would\u00a0materialize only if regulators approve\u00a0the controversial pipeline project.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/montreal-mayor-denis-coderre-energy-east-opposition-1.3413117\">Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre says Energy East pipeline too risky<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/energy-east-pipeline-new-revisions-1.3369504\">Energy East pipeline cost up to $15.7B as TransCanada makes 700 route changes<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The proposal has run into major opposition in Quebec, with\u00a0the mayors of Montreal\u00a0and dozens of\u00a0surrounding municipalities saying the project&#8217;s\u00a0environmental\u00a0risks outweigh its economic benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The $15.7-billion Energy East pipeline would carry a million\u00a0barrels a day of western crude as far east as Saint John\u00a0to serve\u00a0domestic refineries and international customers.<\/p>\n<p>The project would include the existing TransCanada pipeline as far east as Montreal and would require the construction of 1,600 kilometres of new pipeline, including a long section that would run through Quebec to the south coast of New Brunswick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Construction possible\u00a0by 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the federal government and the National Energy Board give\u00a0their\u00a0OK, TransCanada\u00a0has said it could\u00a0begin construction by 2018.
