{"id":17274,"date":"2016-02-02T12:17:55","date_gmt":"2016-02-02T17:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=17274"},"modified":"2016-02-02T12:18:13","modified_gmt":"2016-02-02T17:18:13","slug":"retail-apocalypse-2016-brings-empty-shelves-and-store-closings-all-across-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=17274","title":{"rendered":"Retail Apocalypse: 2016 Brings Empty Shelves And Store Closings All Across America"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-headline\">\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/endoftheamericandream.com\/archives\/retail-apocalypse-2016-brings-empty-shelves-and-store-closings-all-across-america\" target=\"_blank\">Retail Apocalypse: 2016 Brings Empty Shelves And Store Closings All Across America<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-bodycopy clearfix\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Q4FIfN\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5889\" src=\"http:\/\/endoftheamericandream.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Closed-Public-Domain-460x491.jpg\" alt=\"Closed - Public Domain\" width=\"460\" height=\"491\" \/><\/a>Major retailers in the United States are shutting down hundreds of stores, and shoppers are reporting alarmingly bare shelves in many retail locations that are still open all over the country.\u00a0 It appears that the retail apocalypse that made so many headlines in 2015 has gone to an entirely new level as we enter 2016.\u00a0 As economic activity\u00a0<a title=\"slows down\" href=\"http:\/\/theeconomiccollapseblog.com\/archives\/economic-activity-is-slowing-down-much-faster-than-the-experts-anticipated\" target=\"_blank\">slows down<\/a>\u00a0and Internet retailers capture more of the market, brick and mortar retailers are cutting their losses.\u00a0 This is especially true in areas that are on the lower portion of the income scale.\u00a0 In impoverished urban centers all over the nation, it is not uncommon to find entire malls that have now been completely abandoned.\u00a0 It has been estimated that there is about a billion square feet of retail space sitting empty in this country, and this crisis is only going to get worse as the retail apocalypse accelerates.<\/p>\n<p>We always get a wave of store closings after the holiday shopping season, but this year has been particularly active.\u00a0 The following are just a few of the big retailers that have already made major announcements\u2026<\/p>\n<p>-Wal-Mart is closing\u00a0<a title=\"269 stores\" href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2016\/01\/walmart_drops_discount_to_50_p.html\" target=\"_blank\">269 stores<\/a>, including\u00a0<a title=\"154\" href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2016\/01\/walmart_drops_discount_to_50_p.html\" target=\"_blank\">154<\/a>\u00a0inside the United States.<\/p>\n<p>-K-Mart is closing down\u00a0<a title=\"more than two dozen stores\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/milwaukee\/news\/2016\/01\/15\/wal-mart-kmart-jcpenney-closing-stores.html\" target=\"_blank\">more than two dozen stores<\/a>\u00a0over the next several months.<\/p>\n<p>-J.C.
