Zika Virus Threatens “Disaster In Rio” Olympics As WHO Declares Global Emergency<\/a><\/h3>\n

From the initial discovery in the\u00a0heart of Ugandan forest darkness<\/a>to\u00a0mysterious genetically-modified Mosquitoes in Brazil<\/a>, the newest threat to human health (most notably pregnant women) is the ominous-sounding Zika virus. The epidemic is spreading from its epicenter in Brazil –\u00a0threatening disaster at the Olympics\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>with “female athletes to consider participation “very carefully”<\/a>“, to\u00a0Colombia (with 2100 pregant women infected)<\/a><\/strong>, and further north in America with\u00a0CDC confirming 6 cases in Texas<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As we previously introduced<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0The World Health Organization is\u00a0convening<\/a>\u00a0an Emergency Committee under International Health Regulations today, concerning the Zika virus \u2018explosive\u2019 spread throughout the Americas.\u00a0<\/strong>The virus reportedly has the potential to reach pandemic proportions \u2014 possibly around the globe. But understandingwhy<\/em>\u00a0this outbreak happened is vital to curbing it. As the WHO\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0said:<\/p>\n

\n
\u201cA causal relationship between Zika virus infection and birth malformations and neurological syndromes \u2026 is strongly suspected. [These links] have rapidly changed the risk profile of Zika, from a mild threat to one of alarming proportions.<\/em><\/div>\n

\u201cWHO is deeply concerned about this rapidly evolving situation for 4 main reasons: the possible association of infection with birth malformations and neurological syndromes; the potential for further international spread given the wide geographical distribution of the mosquito vector; the lack of population immunity in newly affected areas; and the absence of vaccines, specific treatments, and rapid diagnostic tests [\u2026]<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe level of concern is high, as is the level of uncertainty.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Zika seemingly exploded out of nowhere.\u00a0<\/strong>Though it was first discovered in 1947, cases only sporadically occurred throughout Africa and southern Asia.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In 2007, the first case was reported in the Pacific.<\/strong>\u00a0In 2013, a smattering of small outbreaks and individual cases were officially documented in Africa and the western Pacific. They also began showing up in the Americas.\u00a0In May 2015, Brazil reported its first case of Zika virus \u2014 and the situation changed dramatically.<\/strong><\/p>\n
