{"id":17040,"date":"2016-01-28T11:24:35","date_gmt":"2016-01-28T16:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=17040"},"modified":"2016-01-28T11:24:35","modified_gmt":"2016-01-28T16:24:35","slug":"former-chesapeake-energy-ceo-aubrey-mcclendon-bringing-fracking-to-argentina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=17040","title":{"rendered":"Former Chesapeake Energy CEO Aubrey McClendon Bringing Fracking to Argentina"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2016\/01\/28\/former-chesapeake-energy-ceo-aubrey-mcclendon-fracking-argentina\" target=\"_blank\">Former Chesapeake Energy CEO Aubrey McClendon Bringing Fracking to Argentina<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10259 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted desktop-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/shutterstock_190590185.jpg?itok=zO7ikhMC\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"354\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"horizontal-social-bar horizontal-social-bar-top clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>Aubrey McClendon, the embattled former\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">CEO<\/span>\u00a0and co-founder of Chesapeake Energy, has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rigzone.com\/news\/oil_gas\/a\/142501\/Shale_Pioneer_McClendon_Joins_500M_Argentina_Venture\" target=\"_blank\">announced his entrance into Argentina<\/a>\u00a0to begin\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/fracking-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">hydraulic fracturing (\u201cfracking\u201d)<\/a>\u00a0in the country&#8217;s Vaca Muerta Shale\u00a0basin.<\/p>\n<p>Though he retired<a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/oklahoma\/2013\/01\/29\/aubrey-mcclendon-to-retire-as-chesapeake-energy-ceo\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0as Chesapeake Energy&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">CEO<\/span>\u00a0back in 2013<\/a>\u00a0in the aftermath of a shareholder revolt, McClendon wasted little time in creating a new company called American Energy Partners (<span class=\"caps\">AEP<\/span>).\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">AEP<\/span>, like Chesapeake, has found itself mired since its onset in legal snafus over its treatment of landowners. With\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">AEP<\/span>not getting a red carpet roll-out in the U.S., McClendon has looked southward for other\u00a0lucrative business\u00a0adventures.<\/p>\n<p>DeSmog reported in September that McClendon has also teamed up with a private equity company\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/09\/08\/aubrey-mcclendon-mexico-fracking-vicente-fox\" target=\"_blank\">affiliated with former Mexican president Vicente Fox<\/a>\u00a0to begin tapping into Mexico&#8217;s portion of the Eagle Ford Shale basin. We also reported that he has begun\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/09\/08\/australian-aboriginal-groups-set-oppose-gas-fracker-aubrey-mcclendon-s-down-under-drilling-plans\" target=\"_blank\">doing business in Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All of those countries have something in common that makes them different from the U.S.: \u00a0lax royalty and land deal\u00a0laws.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/news\/the-big-fracking-bubble-the-scam-behind-the-gas-boom-20120301\" target=\"_blank\">McClendon boasted in an investor call<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and as Chesapeake formerly acknowledged on a<a href=\"http:\/\/http\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141020012435\/http:\/\/www.chk.com\/About\/Pages\/History.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0portion of its website<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/http\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20141020012435\/http:\/\/www.chk.com\/About\/Pages\/History.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">since taken down<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the company chose the land grab as a key part of its business\u00a0model.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico, Australia and Argentina are still in the \u201cland grab\u201d phase of development, with zero production scale fracking taking place in any of the three\u00a0countries.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">AEP<\/span>\u00a0attempts to preempt \u201cland grab\u201d charges on its\u00a0website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work hard to earn \u2013 and maintain \u2013 your trust,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanenergypartners.com\/owners\" target=\"_blank\">writes\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">AEP<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWe practice open, honest communication with our owner partners to strengthen those partnerships forged in mutual\u00a0trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Banana Republic Land\u00a0Laws<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mexicolaw.com\/LawInfo13.htm\" target=\"_blank\">In Mexico<\/a>, unlike in the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0in which\u00a0in most states&#8217;\u00a0landowners own the minerals underneath their land, the government maintains mineral rights.
