{"id":16967,"date":"2016-01-26T19:24:01","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T00:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=16967"},"modified":"2016-01-26T19:24:01","modified_gmt":"2016-01-27T00:24:01","slug":"something-really-snapped-at-the-comex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=16967","title":{"rendered":"Something Really Snapped At The Comex"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2016-01-26\/comex-snaps-gold-dilution-hits-record-542-oz-gold-claims-every-ounce-physical\" target=\"_blank\">Something Really Snapped At The Comex<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"tabs\">There had been an eerie silence at the Comex in recent weeks, where after registered gold tumbled to a record 120K ounces in early December nothing much had changed, an in fact the total amount of physical deliverable aka &#8220;registered&#8221; gold, had stayed practically unchanged at 275K ounces all throughout January.<\/div>\n<div class=\"node sticky\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>Until today, when in the latest update from the Comex vault, we learn that a whopping 201,345 ounces of Registered gold had been de-warranted at the owner&#8217;s request, and shifted into the Eligible category, reducing the total mount of Comex Registered gold by 73%, from 275K to just 74K overnight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user5\/imageroot\/2016\/01-overflow\/reg%20gold.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user5\/imageroot\/2016\/01-overflow\/reg%20gold_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"346\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This took place as a result of adjustments at vaults belonging to Scotia Mocatta (-95K ounces), HSBC (-85K ounces), and Brink&#8217;s (-21K ounces).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the aggregate gold open interest remained largely unchanged, at just about 40 million ounces.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user5\/imageroot\/2016\/01-overflow\/open%20interes_0_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"346\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This means that the ratio which we have been carefully tracking\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-08-03\/comex-edge-deliverable-gold-drops-record-low-124-ounces-paper-every-ounce-physical\">since August 2015\u00a0<\/a>when it first blew out, namely the &#8220;coverage ratio&#8221; that shows the total number of gold claims relative to the physical gold that &#8220;backs&#8221; such potential delivery requests, &#8211; or simply said\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>physical-to-paper gold dilution<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; just exploded.<\/p>\n<p>As the chart below shows &#8211; which is disturbing without any further context &#8211; the 40\u00a0<strong>million\u00a0<\/strong>ounces of gold open interest and the record low 74\u00a0<strong>thousand<\/strong>\u00a0ounces of registered gold imply that as of Monday&#8217;s close there was a whopping 542 ounces in potential paper claims to every ounces of physical gold.
