(Shutterstock )<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrap8 story-bodywrapper sclt-storybody\">\n<div id=\"sharecount_gig_containerParent\" class=\"story-middle col2\">\n<div id=\"sharecount\" class=\"sclt-share\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1453485119366_15\" class=\"gig-bar-container gig-share-bar-container\">The cost of living in Canada went up by\u00a01.6 per cent in December due to higher prices for food, shelter and transportation.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-content\">\n<p>Statistics Canada reported Friday that Canada&#8217;s inflation rate is now at its highest level in more than a year.<\/p>\n<p>All eight subsectors the agency\u00a0pays attention to in calculating the inflation rate went up during the month.<\/p>\n<p>But food\u00a0led the way, as\u00a0Canadians paid\u00a03.7 per cent more for food last month than they did in the same month a year earlier. \u00a0That means food prices increased at more than twice the overall inflation rate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thecanadianpress-a.akamaihd.net\/graphics\/2016\/static\/cp-cda-inflation-dec.png\" alt=\"CANADIAN INFLATION IN DECEMBER\" width=\"100%\" \/>&#8220;Food prices\u00a0were a source of upward pressure, amid the great cauliflower crisis,&#8221; BMO economist Doug Porter noted, referencing a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/cauliflower-cost-more-this-christmas-1.3370301\">popular internet meme of this year centred around exorbitant prices observed for the vegetable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh vegetables were indeed among the biggest factors in the higher inflation rate, up 13.3 per cent in December on an annualized basis.<\/p>\n<p>The data agency&#8217;s transportation index, which includes gas prices, increased by 0.6 per cent after declining for each of the previous 13 months.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, prices rose in every province and territory, but B.C. led\u00a0with an inflation rate of 1.9 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economists have been warning that the lower Canadian dollar would start to push up prices for imported items such as food and gasoline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"colfull\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inflation in Canada ticks up to 1.6% in December on higher food prices Food prices are increasing at more than twice the overall inflation rate, Statistics Canada says.
