{"id":16784,"date":"2016-01-21T13:19:09","date_gmt":"2016-01-21T18:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=16784"},"modified":"2016-01-21T13:19:24","modified_gmt":"2016-01-21T18:19:24","slug":"jailing-an-anti-drone-protester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=16784","title":{"rendered":"Jailing an Anti-Drone Protester"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2016\/01\/20\/jailing-an-anti-drone-protester\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jailing an Anti-Drone Protester<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"entry-meta\">As the U.S. government fights its endless wars around the globe, some Americans are moving beyond despair and confusion to challenge the military machine, people like Mary Anne Grady Flores, who was sentenced to six months in jail for photographing an anti-drone protest, writes Bill Moyers.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>Mary Anne Grady Flores\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ovpNaiujlH4\">is in jail today<\/a>\u00a0and American citizens everywhere can surely breathe a sigh of relief that we are safe from her criminal behavior at least for the next six months.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the length of\u00a0the sentence this 59-year-old peace activist in upstate New York began on Tuesday \u2014 one day after the United States honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for his commitment to nonviolent civil disobedience. If he were here today, the martyred Dr. King would surely be shaking his head that America still has a problem with peaceful\u00a0dissenters of conscience.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7121\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/predatordronemissile.jpg?82332e\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7121\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7121\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/predatordronemissile.jpg?82332e\" alt=\"A Predator drone firing a missile.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Predator drone firing a missile.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>And what exactly did Grady Flores do to warrant spending the next six months in jail? She photographed a peaceful protest outside Hancock Field Air National Guard Base near Syracuse, New York. The base is where the U.S. trains pilots to launch drone strikes in the Middle East, particularly in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t a crime for her to be taking pictures of the demonstration,\u00a0but when she\u00a0briefly and unintentionally \u2014 yes, unintentionally \u2014 stepped onto a road that belongs\u00a0to the base, she violated what authorities called \u201can order of protection,\u201d which had been issued in 2012 to forbid protesters from approaching the home or workplace of Col.
